  1. It also buys you another year for Pie to play in Iowa, so you can find out if he's your CF of the future, or if you need to go in another direction.
  2. You'd also be a fool not to like his production against RHP. Isn't that what you'd look for in a platoon player? Yeah, you called him a platoon player at best. He's a good platoon player and you can get 130 games out of him - the reason he played 110 and 89 was because his team didn't always play him against RHP either. 130 games isn't full time, IMO. He'd still need a platoon mate. so, put Soriano in CF against LHP and sign a cheap guy who can hit lefties.
  3. The Cubs can't win 100 games this year unless they sign Schmidt, Bonds, Zito, and maybe another bench player. If the Cubs signed Schmidt and Prior came back healthy, they could win 100 with the current offense, IMO. I think the Cubs will be either good or great in 2007, with Prior being the deciding factor between the two. Well, I guess the Cubs will be good in 2007.
  4. I wouldn't, if you take money into account. $21M in the next two years? I'll take Jones for half that, thanks.

  8. And you're going to pay an enormous premium for that slight probability. No, but Jim Hendry and the tribune are, and I can understand some of the logic. This is all I am trying to say: I would feel more comfortable with Meche or Lilly, money not withstanding. Lilly and Meche represent a safer bet than our in house options, but will come at a ridiculous premium. Hendry, in all likelihood, is going to pay that ridiculous premium, and rather than have my head explode thinking about the financial ramifications, I am trying to rationalize it as best I can. I definitely see what they are thinking. All I'm saying is they are paying a huge sum in an attempt to guarantee mediocrity. Their goal seems to be to not lose 95 games, as opposed to try and field the best team possible. I'd rather lose 100 in pursuit of 100 wins than win 81 in pursuit of 85 wins. The question is, how can the Cubs reasonably pursue 100 wins with the team they have now?
  9. The Cobs scouts must be psychic, then. Jones experienced a huge BABIP spike and Giles a large dip. Huge spike?
  10. I'd be asking that much if I was better than Juan Pierre and just watched him get a $9M/year contract. That isn't an unreasonable amount for Lofton, IMO. Especially for just 1 year. It's not unreasonable to ask, but it'd be stupid to pay that much. He's a platoon guy at best. A platoon guy at best? He had a .360 OBP last year.

  12. Once Schmidt starts working with Duncan, he'll probably put up an ERA below 1 :x
  13. jones and marshall for harden!
  14. what are the Mets going to trade for him??? They wanted Milledge and Heilman for Zito, and he was set to leave in 2 months. This is a guy who's as good as Zito and is younger and cheaper. I'd think the A's would demand a truckload in return.
  15. So would everybody else, but Schmidt and Batista will cost $5M per year more than Meche and Lilly. I'm sure if the Cubs don't get Schmidt, that it won't be because they don't think he's a good pitcher.
  16. that'd be awful
  17. Surely you can't be serious. I am serious, and don't call me Shirley. was waiting for that one.
  18. By the way, doesn't this sort of make sense? If the guy is pitching well, that means he's getting a greater percentage of guys out. When you do that, you'll leave more people on base. Chris Carpenter's LOB% was average to below-average while he was on the Blue Jays. The last three years, it's been well above the league average, and well above his other years. Guess that's just luck too.
  19. Agreed. care to back this up? He has never pitched 200 innings in his career, he is a .500 pitcher at best, he has mechanics that need to be fixed before he has a serious arm injury, his attitude toward pitching has been questioned, flyball pitcher, and he pitches high in the zone. Sounds to me like an average pitcher. Please, share with us who you want, then say all the good things that you possibly can about them while omitting all the negatives.
  20. I hope you prefer Jennings over Lilly only because of their contracts. Jennings' 2006 was also somewhat fluky, and it's the only year out of the last four that he's been better than average.
  21. OK, well let's say that he's not worth the money or something like that, or the deal would suck. As a major league pitcher, he doesn't suck. And Toronto was more homer-friendly than Wrigley the past two years, by the way.
  22. I think Patterson probably has a chance of being a better second baseman that DeRosa in 2007. he might, but I didn't really bother making that argument since DeRosa is obviously going to be the 2B all of this year, assuming he's healthy.
  23. Agreed. care to back this up? His only two good years (02 and 04) he had BABIPs 70 points and 40 points lower than his LD% would have predicted as well as LOB% higher than league average and well above his other years. OK, so that suggests that during the two years that he was significantly above-average (120 ERA+ each year), he was lucky. So again - where is the evidence that he sucks?
  24. The guy has played 2B for five years at least, including two in the Cubs' organization. Now they're going to try him out at another position? What's the point? DeRosa is 31 and no better than average. Patterson is a good prospect and might be better than DeRosa in 2008. You can't block a potential second baseman of the future with a stopgap type of player. What should be done - keep Patterson at 2B. Play DeRosa this year and give Patterson a full year at 2B in Iowa. If he does well and has an adequate spring in 2008, give him the 2B job with the big club - assuming DeRosa doesn't go wild in 2007. If he bombs (he won't obviously), then you've got a guy who can play everyday 2B already on the roster in DeRosa. If Patterson plays well, then you've got a solid utility guy in DeRosa and a good, cheap second baseman. This probably makes too much sense for the Cubs to consider it.
