  1. John Anderson pointed out on SportsCenter that going into last night's game at Cameron, both Maryland and Duke were 22-7 overall with an 8-6 ACC record; Duke had the #4 SOS while Maryland's was #10; Duke had won 4 straight and Maryland 5 in a row. Yet in the ESPN/USAToday poll, Duke was #14, while Maryland was unranked. Obviously Duke was overrated (what else is new?), but how was Maryland unranked? Texas (#15, 21-7), Oregon (#18, 22-7), Louisville (#19, 21-8), Marquette (#21, 22-8), Virginia Tech (#22, 20-8), Vandy (#23, 19-9), USC (#24, 21-8), and Virginia (#25, 19-8) all were ranked, had similar or worse records than Maryland and had lower RPIs. Good thing the rankings don't mean anything... Maryland actually has a shot at a 3-seed as long as they beat NC State in their last regular season ACC game and then have a solid showing the the ACC tourney - which is actually in Tampa this year, so UNC and Duke don't get to play home games like they usually do in this event.
  2. Come on, ERA+? It's just ERA with park effects accounted for. Not understanding a stat like that is just laziness.
  3. the media sure loves the scrappy little white guy
  4. you know you're on a cubs board when half the people have pick as the champion a team that hasn't won the world series for 100 years
  5. Duke will finish .500 in conference if/when UNC beats them on Sunday. Luckily for them they played a strong out-of-conference schedule. BTW, Duke's a 5 in Bracketology. Which is complete crap. Duke's #14 in the polls, which is also complete crap.
  6. this thread has become way awesome
  7. why sign Roger Clemens? It'd be really expensive, and I'm sure Kip Wells or Braden Looper will just turn into the second coming of Roger Clemens.
  8. oh by the way duke lost at home to maryland, and anytime someone comes in and beats duke in front of those loser fans in cameron, it's fun to enjoy it.
  9. Yeah unfortunately for aTm, Kevin Durant is also that type of guy.
  10. Try to keep your lunch down
  11. i still can't believe ND has a basketball team
  12. ugh, 58-25... put in the scrubs plz
  13. I don't know if he changed his mind the signing after seeing Matthews play zero games in an Angels uniform.
  14. is this matt white who profited from the draft loophole, along with bobby seay?
  15. Other games at the half: Bucknell 31, Navy 16 HC 42, Lafayette 18 Army 24, Lehigh 19 American 24, Colgate 20 PL basketball at its finest!
  16. 42-18 at halftime and Lafayette has 13 turnover... my God are they bad.
  17. So far so good... 20 point lead over wretched Lafayette in the first half. Lafayette has 12 turnovers through 15 minutes of play. In games that even fewer people care about, Penn State leads Iowa by 9 in their attempt to break their spectacular 13 game losing streak (all against Big Ten opponents). Looks like PSU's losses to Southeast Louisiana and Stony Brook were not a fluke.
  18. I agree, and if I wanted to know a player's value and could pick only one of the Baseball Encyclopedia stats to look at, I'd look at OBP. But at the same time, Nick Johnson was 4th in the NL with a .428 OBP, and Ryan Howard was 5th, at .425. But obviously Howard was far more productive. That's why I don't understand why some people have such a problem with things like VORP or WARP3. Yeah, they might not familiar to you, but no single traditional stat captures a player's value as fully as those two. If you just take a little time to learn what they mean, you gain a lot of knowledge.
  19. Nomar did just as much as Jeter in 1999 in 100 less at bats. No he didn't. They drove in the same number of runs, but Jeter scored 30 more and created 16 more runs. No question that Nomar had a great year, but he wasn't healthy the whole year, and Jeter was. I'd have gone: Pedro Jeter Manny Palmeiro Pudge Alomar
  20. Actually, Jeter was an MVP caliber player last year. I'd love him if he were a Cub. Seriously. I think Jeter is overappreciated by people like Murray Chass, but underappreciated by a lot of the SABR community. The guy has a career OBP of .388, OPS+ of 123, and WARP3 of 92. That's really good for a shortstop. No, he's not as good as A-Rod, but he's consistently been one of the five best shortstops in the game for more than 10 years, and some of those years has been among the top 2 or 3. Also, in 1999 Jeter finished 6th in MVP voting, but looking at it again, I think he should have either won or placed second.
  21. Actually, Jeter was an MVP caliber player last year.
  22. in his defense, they pay better
  23. Poll on ESPN: 1) Should Ron Santo be elected to the Hall of Fame? 77.6% Yes 22.4% No 2) Should Tony Oliva be elected to the Hall of Fame? 72.2% No 27.8% Yes 3) Should Jim Kaat be elected to the Hall of Fame? 64.7% No 35.3% Yes 4) Should Maury Wills be elected to the Hall of Fame? 71.1% No 28.9% Yes 5) Should Don Newcombe be elected to the Hall of Fame? 76.9% No 23.1% Yes 6) Should Gil Hodges be elected to the Hall of Fame? 55.2% Yes 44.8% No Boy, even the public has it right. If I had my way, Ron Santo and Marvin Miller would have been voted in long ago.
  24. Unfortunately, there are some stubborn, crusty old men on that committee who think that nobody worse than them should be elected. The increased exposure of sabermetrics has helped Santo's cause, and I think most people who truly understand baseball know that Santo is one of the 10 best third basemen in history and belongs in the HOF. But until some of those dinosaurs die off, it's not going to happen, and that's just sad.
