John Anderson pointed out on SportsCenter that going into last night's game at Cameron, both Maryland and Duke were 22-7 overall with an 8-6 ACC record; Duke had the #4 SOS while Maryland's was #10; Duke had won 4 straight and Maryland 5 in a row. Yet in the ESPN/USAToday poll, Duke was #14, while Maryland was unranked. Obviously Duke was overrated (what else is new?), but how was Maryland unranked? Texas (#15, 21-7), Oregon (#18, 22-7), Louisville (#19, 21-8), Marquette (#21, 22-8), Virginia Tech (#22, 20-8), Vandy (#23, 19-9), USC (#24, 21-8), and Virginia (#25, 19-8) all were ranked, had similar or worse records than Maryland and had lower RPIs. Good thing the rankings don't mean anything... Maryland actually has a shot at a 3-seed as long as they beat NC State in their last regular season ACC game and then have a solid showing the the ACC tourney - which is actually in Tampa this year, so UNC and Duke don't get to play home games like they usually do in this event.
