Indians sign Paul Byrd

ul Byrd has reached agreement with the Indians on a two-year, $14.25 million contract with a club option for a third season, reports FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

He'll make $14 million for the next two years. The third-year option is worth $8 million and includes a $250,000 buyout. Byrd is passing up a reported three-year offer from the Royals. He'll join C.C. Sabathia, Cliff Lee and Jake Westbrook in the Cleveland rotation. With Kevin Millwood out or reach, the Indians could re-sign Scott Elarton or bring in another fifth starter. If they land Trevor Hoffman as a closer, they may allow youngsters to compete for the final rotation spot.

Nice pickup. I'd rather we'd signed him to that contract, but good for them. Their rotation will be solid again this year.

Let me just say that I think it absolutely ridiculous that every single once half decent starter in the game is seemingly now capable of commanding at least $7m per year in free agency. Last year and so far this have produced contracts with these average salaries...

This just increases the value of our young arms. Nolasco, Ryu...guys that don't project to be frontline starters, but #3's, they should be in demand.

With so many mediocre pitchers getting 9 mil a year (i.e. Clement), 10 mil a year for Burnett could end up looking real good.
