40-man/rule 5 move:

Jermaine Van Buren - R - Red Sox

Red Sox acquired RHP Jermaine Van Buren from the Cubs for a player to be named.

We assume it will be a pretty good PTBN, but the Cubs will just block him by signing the 2008 versions of Bobby Howry and Scott Eyre three years from now. Van Buren, 25, has spectacular minor league numbers the last two years -- 59 hits allowed and 134 strikeouts in 112 IP. His low-90s fastball and slider should combine to make him a useful reliever, perhaps even a quality setup man in time. Dec. 1 - 1:48 pm et

We knew these types of trades would be coming this week due to the upcoming Rule 5 draft. The 40-man roster is overloaded with the signings of Eyre, Howry and Mabry coming soon, so expect more deals of this nature.

The Rockies are rumored to be after Todd Wellemeyer. Link

To me, he showed much more potential than Welly or Novoa or Wuertz. I guess maybe the BoSox saw what I did. I hope that PTBNL is a very good one.

So what's up w/ the server here? Has everyone else been having trouble getting in here?

Yes, first time I've been in since yesterday afternoon. Craziness, I tell ya. I broke down and checked the ESPN boards. Man, I feel dirty.

I hope this wasn't just to clear room on the 40 man roster while Jose Macias is still taking up a slot.

Van Buren, like Leicester before him, didn't figure into the Cubs plans. Nothing surprising here.

The problem with moving JVB is that we never even had a chance to see him over an extended period of time. JH must be getting something decent otherwise there are easier players to lose on the 40-man IMO.

this better be a pretty good ptbnl.

Yeah, it better be Manny. After all JVB was about the 15th guy on the staff.

Manny can't be a ptbnl.

Not that he ever would be, but why can't he?

I think only minor leaguers are ptbnls. Manny is on the 25 man roster.

There's a rule that PTBNL's can't come from the 25 or 40 man roster, I can't remember which. Either way, Manny applies to both.

He's been placed on waivers, you'd think he could be a PTBNL...

Did you check JVB's and Wuertz's minor league numbers?
