Is Dusty one of those managers who thinks a rotation "needs" at least one lefty? If he is, pencil in Rusch.

No he isn't. But Hendry is a GM who has shown he wants a lefty in the rotation even over a more promising right-hander.

So it isn't clear. However, even knowing Hendry's preference doesn't pencil in Rusch as a starter, because Rusch has shown value as a swing-man in the past and that is his defined role already.

So the question remains why even bring Rusch back if you have Williams? Signing Eyre made the Rusch signing redundant.

Don't see how the Eyre singing's redundant. Williams may be on the move. Perhaps the Cubs can get Wilkerson.

The Eyre signing affects Ohman more than it does Rusch. I'd rather keep Ohman but if he is part of a deal for an OF than so be it. I'd imagine Ohman would be pretty attractive to a lot of teams due to his experience, price and Lefthandedness.

I see the pen shaping up this way:

Dempster

Howry

Eyre

Williamson

Wuertz

Williams

Rusch

This assumes that Baker will yet again go with a 12 man pitching staff and that Hendry is serious about having 7 starters and going out and getting another SP arm.

This makes Novoa and Ohman expendable in trades.

No Ohman?? If Ohman gets left out so Dusty can have 2 guys he pitches for 3 innings once every 2 weeks, I'm gonna be....not so happy.

Hendry did say that he has no intention of playing Rusch out of the pen anymore. He may have been making it up, but he did say it. I don't really know what that means, though, as he also told Rusch that all he was guaranteed was a shot at a rotation spot.

I don't think Ohman is going anywhere. It seems to me that Hendry probably would like to have Ohman and Eyre as his two lefties in the pen and Rusch in the rotation.

Dempster

Howry

Wuertz/Novoa (one is traded)

Williamson

Eyre

Ohman

Williams

He seems to want depth in starting pitching but if the right deal comes along I think he would move Williams and then they could slot Mitre or Wellemeyer into that bullpen spot.

I would be very surprised if they don't carry 12 pitchers again.

Hendry must be planning on moving an arm.

What do you think he'll do with the arm once he moves it. My guess is pick up a doughnut.

I could honestly see the Cubs going with a six man rotation to start the year if Wood is healthy. This way we can help keep Prior, Wood, and Maddux healthy and strong for the full season. I could handle a six man rotation through mid to late May and then possibly reinstitute it in August to give some extra rest before the playoff push in September.

You also cannot forget that as of right the Cubs also have Rich Hill who can jump into the rotation when needed. And we all know that Hill is one of Hendry's favorites. In my opinion the Cubs already have seven starters when you include Hill and personally I believe it is necessary to have atleast 6 starters you will feel comfortable with throwing in at any time. Just look at how many starters the Yankees went through last year.

A staff of Z, Prior, Maddux, Wood, Rusch, and Williams as startes and Dempster, Eyre, Howry, Williamson, Wuertz and Ohman looks pretty solid to me. Definitely an upgrade over last year.

I know, it just seems that it is happening more often recently. Probably just a slowdown in the site causing many people to do what you did.
