As a 4th OF, I think he'd be fine. Joey has speed and is a good bunter. A more refined version of Adam Greenberg's upside, if you will.

But I sure wouldn't give much in the way of talent for Gathrait, and I SURE wouldn't be thinking of him as a CF starter. Ugh.

Greenberg can take a walk and hit more than singles. Gathright's been an okay base stealer at the major league level, but he's also put up a .316 OBP and .656 OPS there. He won't be worth what it'll cost to get him methinks.

So...what's the difference between Gathright and Pierre? :D

Just kidding, of course. Pierre has a much better record of success than a .316 OBP. But they're very similar types of players. Pierre's just better at it. It wouldn't make any sense to have both on the roster, though. I hope Hendry's just looking at that deal in case the Pierre deal falls through.

I thought it was interesting to note that the Cubs have inquired about Huff, too. But no word about Lugo. :(

No, not Lugo. The player on Tampa we should really be angling for is Jonny Gomes. How do they have room for him, and Crawford, and Huff, and now Baldelli is back? One of them has to go, and I thought I remembered hearing this past offseason that Gomes had run-ins with management on several occasions.

Plus, Gomes > Huff, Baldelli, Crawford, so that's even better yet.

Oh, I agree with you completely. But I don't think Gomes is available, whereas Lugo may be.

It would be interesting, though, if the Cubs had Furcal, Gathright, Pierre and Patterson on the same team to see footraces before the games!

thatd be a great idea if not for the fact that new people are running things in tampa and there's a chance they arent morons this time.

I would have liked to have seen at least one of Greenburg and Fontenot on our bench but I think there's a chance none of them are even in the Cibs org after Rule 5.

I'll bet you my house against $10,000 of yours that Mike Fontenot is not selected in the Rule 5 draft.

I totally agree that he likely won't be worth what the DRays are asking.

I just wanted to point out that his major league OBP might be a bit misleading. His minor league OBP was excellent, better than Greenberg's on the whole, IIRC. So he is major league OBP likely will improve from .316 before it is all said and done and he would probably be a bit better than Greenberg at getting on base.

His minor league OBP is much better because he was able to slap the ball around to a .316 minor league AVG. In order to have a decent to good OBP, he's going to need to hit .300 at the big league level. Not impossible given his speed, but he's still a ways from that, plus he hits nothing(and I mean nothing) but singles.

Delmon Young

Joey Gathright

Aubrey Huff

Carl Crawford

Rocco Baldelli

Jonny Gomes

Elijah Dukes

BJ Upton

All of the above are players who could potentially be in Tampa Bay's OF next season. Eight guys in total. Dukes is the farthest away (although he put up a good showing in the Southern League) and there are rumors circulating about Upton and Young regarding whether or not the organization will bring them up this season for monetary reasons. Even if none of those three guys come up, that still leaves five players eligible for TB's OF next season.

All of these guys have pretty good to terrific value. They have plenty of needs that could be addressed via trades...so hopefully they realize these facts and address them accordingly...

...by trading Jonny Gomes to the Cubs for Jerry Hairston. :D

Tampa is so desperate for pitching...why not Rich Hill and a reliever like Andy Shipman or David Aardsma for Gomes? Or a situational lefty like Jon Koronka? I don't know that Tampa would get more than that for Gomes; as good as he looked in 2005, he IS still somewhat unproven, they DO have other quality OF-ers, and we ARE presumably giving them quality talent in exchange. At least, everyone keeps saying Rich Hill is our best pitching prospect....

If Petit and another minor leaguer are worth Carlos Delgado, how is Gomes worth more than say, Hill + Aardsma? I don't see it.

Delgado's massive contract certainly brought his price down. That's a huge difference. Gomes is still a year or two from arbitration.
