The likelihood of Brian Giles returning to the Padres next season took a severe hit Wednesday afternoon when the club rejected a three-year proposal that the right fielder's agent said was "significantly less" than what Giles can get from at least one other club.

"We're going to go forward with the assumption that the Padres and Brian are not able to make a deal," agent Joe Bick said. "We've been holding off moving in a different direction in hopes of getting something done with the Padres, but there's no reason to believe that's going to happen."

Bick wouldn't discuss the worth of the deal, which is believed to be close to $30 million.

If it isn't the Cubs who the heck is it who's lurking out there? My guess is Seattle, but I am not sure why I think that; its a gut feeling. It reminds me of the Vlad Guerreo stuff a couple of years ago, when no one was mentioning Anaheim as a potential suitor.

Seattle

Boston- could decide they want prospects , or other players and get Giles to play left field.

Since Giles by all means sounds affordable (I would do up to 13/13/13/14 with the 14 a T.O. that vests based on plate appearances), and because all signs point to us getting Pierre soon and eventually Furcal (maybe), then this could prove to be a very successful offseason.

1. Bullpen (done)

2. Offense (Pierre, Furcal, Lee, Giles, Ramirez, Walker, Murton, Barrett)

3. Starting pitcher?

4. Bench (Mabry, etc.)

Even if I disagree with the order that its being completed (I would have gotten the others before the bullpen to assure that we'd have that money for them), Hendry has a plan and he's moving on it.

can we afford Giles with Pierre, Furcal, Eyre, and Howry?

I don't have the payroll numbers exactly, but I thought we had decided we had close to $35M to spend. So I'm thinking -2.7 for Eyre, -4 for Howry, -5 for Pierre (arbitration estimate), -8 for Furcal, that leaves $15.3 left.

If we couldn't afford both, I'd rather have Giles and go with Walker/Cedeno/Perez in the middle infield. Actually, if we COULD afford both, I'd rather go with Giles and a quality starting pitcher. I'm just unsure if I wanna dump as much money as it would take to get Giles....but I'm sure after a season with him on the northside my thoughts would change. :)

Jeez. 3 years 30 mil? If thats all its going to take (plus maybe a year and some dough to get him off the West Coast) then Hendry should be on his phone right now.
