I read on Stltoday Cards forum that the cubs are the front runner in acquiring Mabry. Hendry has suppossedly offered him $1 million guaranteed. I like this move good bench player who can play corner outfeild spots and 1st and 3rd. Until last year he always had good OBP and solid power. I just would hope that he doesnt become this years Todd Hollandworth.

He's a great bench guy. Good pinch hitter, and you can play him all over the place. I think Tony even had him as the emergency catcher last year. He'll win you 3-5 games a year with a big hit or a defensive play. I'd hate to see him leave St. Louis (again)...

Sign him up. He'd be a great bench guy. Much better than seeing Macias playing 3b when Aramis needs a day off. He could also give D Lee an occasional day off. I'm all for it.

Could you imagine the joy this would bring to replace Macias with Mabry? I'm giddy just thinking about it.

OMG, I didn't even think about Macias. That would be the best part of the deal. Bye bye, Gremlin. It's been real (as in, real painful to watch).

if this is true it probably is the first time this offseason that I am happy about a move that the cubs have made. Mabry in place of Macias would be a major upgrade. I do fear though that he would get too many of Murtons ABs in left though

well murton proved himself last year that he deserves the starting role from the get-go, and it should be inexsuable for dusty to let anyone else start there coming off the bench. No B/S platoon crap.

Great bench player. Left handed pop. $1m price tag? Sounds good, as long as he's signed to be a bench player, and Hendry doesn't tell him what he told Hollandsworth last winter (yes, I'm afraid of LH corner OF veterans).

I don't think he's been promised a chance to start since he first came up with the Cards.

Old worries die hard. I think either way it would be a good move, though, because in the end I think Murton performed well enough for Dusty to trust him unlike the other rookie players he's had on a shorter leash.

Mabry would be a solid move for a solid amount of money. So, then our bench would right now be:

Blanco

Perez

Mabry

The worrisome part of this is that the "report" claimed that the offer was WITH INCENTIVES.

As I posted a while back, it seems like one way Buttermaker endears himself to the veterans is by helping them earn their incentive money.

I'd rather Hendry guarantee him $1.5 than give him a deal of $1.0 with incentives.

Take away the "incentive" for Buttermaker to buddy up to him by helping him earn that extra money.

Well, that is a legitimate concern, but Mabry can still get 3 (or so) starts a week between LF, RF, 3B and 1B without really taking away any significant playing time from anybody. Not to mention PH oppurtunities that he will probably get on an almost daily basis (when not starting). I'm sure he could get a significant amount of plate appearences (if that were tied into the incentives).

Yes, but we know that wouldn't be likely.

Instead, he'd get 5 or 6 starts a week in place of the little redheaded boy.

It's certainly possible. Maybe I'm just feeling strangly optimistic today.

With a 1 million dollar base salary, I think any incentives in the contract would be insignificant in the larger picture of the budget. I would think even if there are incentives, the total package would probably only top out at 1.5 million.

I don't think anyone cares about the extra 500k. They worry about giving Baker the appearence of a platoon partner for Murton.
