It looks like the city is going to sign the lease at some point today. When they do, we can all breathe a very BIG sigh of relief.. and get excited about the up coming season.

You kids have no idea how excited I am about getting back in the booth. I am sure that Nathan, Dean and the new broadcaster in Daytona (I'm sorry, I can't remember his name.. I'm getting old) are feeling the same way.

Good news! Hopefully this is the last obstacle you all have to put up with. It would do everyone in the city some good to be able to get excited about the season.

Glad to read that none of this has hurt your enthusiasm for '06. In regards to Bo's old job in Daytona, I'm wanting to say that I read that they're going to have a 3 man team in the booth for 2006. I'd have to dig up the press release, but I'm pretty sure that's the new setup.

In any case, keep us posted!

An offer to buy the Jaxx days away?

Bennett expects to have an offer on the table within five days.
But no matter who owns the Jaxx, the team will only remain in the city if fan support grows.

I didn't expect to see this article a day after the lease was finally signed. However, I can't say that I blame the Lozinaks if they sell the team after everything the city has done to them.

The contract ends after this season.

Ugh. I thought I remembered a 2 year agreement announcement being made in 2004 but wasn't sure. In a past chat with Oneri Fleita he reiterated that the allegiance of the Cubs is with the franchise and that they would have moved with the team if the team relocated. Can you comment as to whether or not there have been talks in regards to an extension?

Thanks for the info. I'll venture a guess that this is the last season for West Tennessee to be the Cubs AA affiliate. Just a guess

We could know that answer in the next 2 weeks. Here are some lines from a recent article in the Jackson Sun:

Tim Bennett of Mississippi-based Overtime Sports said Tuesday that he hopes to complete his purchase of the Diamond Jaxx by the middle of March.

After Florida, Bennett said he is jetting to Arizona to meet with Cubs owners. He said he expects to return to Jackson sometime between March 10 and 15.

Anyone heard anything new on this? I heard a nice little rumor from a friend of mine who works in minor league baseball. (he told me about the Smokies losing Toronto in favor of St. Louis about 3 months before it happened, and told me that St. Louis was moving to Springfield and we were getting the Diamondbacks AA well before it happened)

And what is this rumor he shared with you?

I did some digging and found an article from 2-3 weeks ago that said that Bennett is no longer pursuing buying the Jaxx. It also said that if the Jaxx are for sell, look for Baton Rouge to be a possible location.

I'd prefer Shreveport, but I could make a road trip or two to Baton Rouge a couple of times a year.

Baton Rouge would be a very interesting place for a minor league team...but would that mean a possible switch to the Texas League? Baton Rouge would support a team quite well I think (judging on LSU attendance).. How big of a city is that? EDIT, Did my own homework, about 225000 people, I like it.

They could remain Southern League in Baton Rouge. While it would be the Western-most team in the SL; Jackson isn't too far away (roughly 3.5 hour drive) and neither is Birmingham. I-10 would pretty much link Baton Rouge to the teams along the Southern coridor like Jacksonville and Mobile.

From what I heard the Cubs affliation is moving to another Southern league team whose contract is up after this year with their current team. From what my friend told me, it's just an affliate swap. I've heard nothing about the Jaxx picking up and moving.

None of this talk will matter when the Jaxx fill the Big Chip this year

One can hope, but from the way the guy I talked to spoke, it's a done deal and both parties are just waiting till near the end of the season to announce it.
