Interesting that he would say Giles would be perfect in the 2 spot in the order. I guess the thinking is that you have .400+ OBP in front of DLee, but I'd probably go Lee, Giles, Ramirez 3,4,5. It would be just as good to have him right in front of Rammy and you break up the righties.

I'd rather see these journalists putting pressure on Cubs management to make a run for Giles rather than making predictions.

I'd like to think that most journalists understandthat there role is to report the news and not create it. However, that just ain't true. Go crazy, Jay Marriotti.

Its probabl6 six of one, half-dozen of the other, but largely depends on what your options ar ein the two hole. If you have Pierre and Furcal, Pierre and Walker, or Furcal and Walker, I agree that Giles hits fourth. If not, who knows?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, it depends on the rest of the team. If Walker is still around, he could conceivably bat 5th with Giles in the two hole. But, I'm afraid Walker is gone and if we're lucky enough to be cheering for Giles in '06, he'll be best served as cleanup.

That's why I don't like the direction they are talking regarding Walker. He is a good lefty bat and getting rid of him makes it even more important (IMO) to get a good lefty bat.

That's not what journalists do. The Cubs management doesn't answer to journalists.

He was writing a column. Columnists write opinion pieces. Beat writers report the news, but that wasn't the role he was playing here.

Either way, saying the Cubs absolutely should go out and sign Giles because he's the perfect fit for their biggest need would not be creating news, it would be expressing an opinion.

That's a matter of opinion. In any case. my point was that journalists - be they columnists or beat writers - aren't supposed to make themselves the story. I won't go into this further; don't want to completely hijack the thread.

Writing a story in which you claim Giles is a perfect fit and the Cubs should make him their top priority is not making yourself the story. It's not even close to that.

In regards to Ichiro, is it possible he could become expendable if the Mariners sign Jojima? i would imagine that Hendry would be all over trading for Ichiro if he did. An OF of Murton, Ichiro, and Giles could be very productive.

As a journalist myself, I have no problem with LoDuca's column today. It was an opinion piece; that was clear. Some of you need to relax. He didn't make himself the story; he wrote a column predicting where 10 guys would end up. Not one of his predictions, by the way, is all that off-base.
