Valentine told the Times last week he would be "very excited" to talk to the Rays. After talking with Valentine, the Rays are planning to adjust the field of candidates, dropping some and perhaps adding a few, with Astros bench coach Cecil Cooper a possibility.

That's weird, I heard or read something that said that Valentine was returning to Japan, they quoted him too.

Mike Schmidt now has interest in the Rays job. Link

While Schmidt certainly will bring big name flavor to the hire, didn't he quit as manager of a Phillies minor league team because he didn't like the job?

Oh well.

Schmidt was so impressed with Sternberg's philosophies and plans for the Rays that he quickly became "interested, intrigued and excited" about getting involved. So Schmidt contacted a friend, Major League Baseball President Bob DuPuy, who contacted Tampa Bay officials, and today Schmidt will interview for the Rays manager's job, the eighth candidate to do so.

It looks like the Rays are interviewing anyone with a pulse.
