I just cant believe how bad Prior got.

What you think this guy is anywhere near what he was in 2003? Last time Prior threw a shutout? Last Prior CG? The guy was supposed to be 'The Ace" he isn't half the pitcher that Z is right now. You see the year Carpenter is having? That was Prior in 2003. Now we have Matt Morris.

Why, you mean to tell me Prior is a dominating pitcher? Heck no he's not so roll your eyes some place else.

"not dominating" and "bad" are not exactly right next to each other on the scale.

WHo retires first, Macias or Baker?

Once Baker goes home, Macias' career is essentailly over. Johnnie B. will stay in the game as long as his boy wants to keep playing.

Macias will retire one day. That's all that keeps me going.

That and the girls in your sig.

Hell yeah.

I just cant believe how bad Prior got. This team is in shambles.

we really need to bring in a better catcher next year. Offense be damned, we need a good catcher to get Prior turned back around.

Sounds like the job of a pitching coach to me.

Depsite the fact he isn't pitching at 2003 level, Mark Prior isn't even in the same galaxy as a bad pitcher. Compare his numbers to Z's and it isn't even close to claiming he's "half the pitcher"

I'm just glad we all can maintain perspective in light of the crappy season we're having.

I sure hope that will be brought up when he comes up for his contract. Cause he is just above average.

Yeah well we have Dusty Baker and one of his cronies will have that job, odds are it won't be done at all.

He's not a BAD pitcher per se but when you were pitching in the mid 2.5 era for a year and now you are getting close to a 3.80 era there is a problem somewhere. Another thing that is troubling is the amount of pitches he has been throwing per inning.

Luckily it will be several years before that happens.

With that I agree. He is having some problems, but he wasn't healthy the whole year. He shows flashes of his brilliance - so he still has it.

Maybe Larry sucks? Maybe playing for this crappy team doesn't bring out the best in him?

He's still a very good pitcher.

Larry does suck. Which one of our young guys has gotten a lot better under him? But, we will just bring in another Baker guy anyway who will also suck at his job. I hope the 2003 guy is still in there because he was great.

I do agree he has it in him, but there has to be a problem somewhere. Pitching coach, mechanics, catcher, sucky team. Who knows but he hasnt pitched the same for a while now. You are right he wasnt healthy all year, and maybe that ball that hit him on the elbow changed something. It def isnt velocity related because he ranges from 93-95

I think Prior really needs a 3rd pitch. With him, it's fastball/slider, and if he's missing his spots, he'll get hit. He doesn't vary his speeds on his non-breaking pitch. If he had an effective changeup to go with his command, he'd be a much more effective and efficient pitcher.

He did miss spring training and had a fractured pitching elbow two months into the season (and returned a lot earlier than anyone I heard saying he would when he was injured). Maybe that's part of the problem ... that and having problems throwing that curveball for strikes, especially early in games.

Rothschild was here before Baker.

Edited to fix quotes - sorry.

I know I worded that poorly I meant another as in with all the other guys we have that are Baker guys who suck. Like Matthews as the hitting coach. Who we couldn't fire because that would hurt Dusty's feelings.

I don't understand the mentality that says if a guy isn't healthy the whole year, he gets a pass on poor performance.

I'm sorry, but that just doesn't work for me. Players play partial seasons all the time and do well. It seems only Cub players come back from injury and forget how to play baseball until the following year's spring training (when they likely get hurt again and start the cycle all over again).

He had a compression fracture in his pitching elbow. Maybe that had an impact on his pitching. He's certainly not pitching as well as he has in the past (2003). He's also still usually able to make adjustments within a game, but the first inning of games has just killed him recently.

I'm willing to consider causes. Whether he gets a pass from you for any reason is obviously up to you.
