I'm glad someone is writing what so many of us feel. And the sarcasm/humor within is also much appreciated.

Great stuff...

So how does Macias continue to have a job? Here are some theories:

1) He seems to know the other Cubs' names.

2) Macias has, on several occasions, gone back in time to save the world from disaster.

3) On one of those occasions, he brought Neifi Perez with him, on a mission to whisper something in W. Mark Felt's ear while he slept.

4) Macias has been instrumental in the development and distribution of "Dusty Baker's Devitalizing Wrinkle-Producing Balm!" which is handed out to all Cubs players between the ages of 24 and 30. This lightly melon-scented balm gradually increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles throughout the season, until Dusty Baker has no choice but to play you since you look like a veteran. Everyone thinks Macias aged two years because of AgeGate, but it's the balm, people. The balm.

That was great. Thanks

What's the over/under on the raise Hendry offers Macias in the offseason?

I'll set it at $75,000.

Is that raise going to be spread over his likely 2 year extention? Or is that per/year?

We all know Baker is not going to allow one his people to be banished this offseason so it wouldn't surprise me to see Jose with a million dollar raise do to all of his "contributions". :roll:

Baseball is weird. Only in baseball would someone as useless as Jose Macias last long enough to become a veteran. BP asked some good questions: "Do teams overstate the importance of late-inning defense, especially when compared to the cost of carrying a below-replacement level hitter for the season? Why is the ability to play six positions badly viewed as a skill?".

In a sensible world Macias would have been out of baseball a few years ago. It still blows my mind that Hendry paid 825K for him.

That's awesome. :lol:

I root for macias because I cannot allow myself to root against a Cubbie. I want the team to win, whoever is in the uniform.

However, Macias is the prime example for why baseball would do well to contract two teams.

Macias' versatility would actually be useful if the Cubs had some guys that could hit on the bench. If the rest of the bench are guys like Glenallen Hill then Macias isn't such a liability. His only chance of justifying his existence is as a defensive replacement. I haven't seen Macias used as a defensive replacement. Could that be because, defensively, he isn't better than any of the starters?

Just because he says he can play every infield and outfield position doesn't make it so. I'd put money on the fact that Derrek Lee could play every position on the field better than Macias.

As the article stated, all that "versatility" isn't worth squat ifyou aren't appreciably better than any player you might be replacing.

If Len is reading:

Dear Len:

Please give copies of this to Jason DuBois with the following note: "No, it wasn't just your imagination", and to Ronny Cedeno with the following message: "Please open if you find yourself on the bench for more than two games in a row next season. Read, understand, and go to Jim Hendry and demand to be traded... even to Kansas City."

Some telling OPS numbers for various Cubs:

Hairston .710

Perez .709

Blanco .702

Patterson .625

Macias .614

Zambrano .743

Wow. Isn't that just pathetic?? All should go but maybe Hank, since he is under contract for 2006 after all, and a couple of the pitchers seem to be more comfortable throwing to him than Barrett.

Hairston has a pop gun bat and a bad attitude; Neifi can't hit; Macias and Patterson are beyond words. ANYONE can come up with better replacements than these guys. Shoot, we have them in the minors, right now:

Hairston-->Mike Fontenot

Perez-->Ryan Theriot

Patterson-->Adam Greenberg

Macias-->Any Warm Body

Note: Hairston, Perez, Patterson and Macias combined make $6.5MM. Six and half million!! Four rookies would cost $1.25MM in their place, and you'd have better than 5 million left over to sign someone of actual value.

Whatever became of Wilton Chavez, inquiring minds want to know??

I've never understood this line of reasoning. For one thing, how is versatility an asset if the presence of other, better bench players makes it redundant? It's basically saying that Macias wouldn't hurt this team much if he never played. That's true, but why pay him nearly a million dollars to do nothing?

I'd rather have several bench players who do one or two things well than have one bench player who does everything extremely poorly.
