obviously mcclain is far from a prospect, but w/ murton back down, the cubs could do a lot worse (in fact, they have!) for a rh bat off the bench. if you are up against billy wagner in the 9th inning down by one, i'd take my chances w/ mcclain as opposed to blanco or a rh batting macias (though i'm sure macias would have made it into this hypothetical game much, much earlier than the 9th).

 

McClain isn't on the 40 man roster.

DAYTONA BLANKED 1-0 IN SERIES FINALE

The Cubs and Cards Engaged In A Pitchers Duel Wednesday With Palm Beach Hanging On To Pull Out The Tight Win

JUPITER, Fla—Wednesday evening’s series finale between the Daytona Cubs and Palm Beach Cardinals was just about as good as it gets when it comes to a good ol’ fashioned pitchers duel between division rivals.

 

Roger Dean Stadium quickly became a showcase of talented young left-handers, as Cubs southpaw Chris Shaver (2-3) squared off against Cardinals lefty Oscar Alvarez (3-0), with the two young hurlers silencing both lineups the entire night.

 

But the Cardinals snuck in an early first inning blow after a double and a run scored from shortstop Tyler Greene, as both squads stayed deadlocked the rest of the way and Palm Beach hung on to win by a final of 1-0.

 

Shaver logged six-plus innings of solid work as he gave up just one earned run on five hits before leaving in the seventh with a blister on his pitching hand.

 

Alvarez was also stellar as he pitched seven full innings of four-hit shutout ball to win his third straight decision of the season.

 

Cards closer Mark Worrell came in for a flawless ninth frame and logged his Florida State League leading 32nd save of the season to put the final nail in the Cubbie coffin.

 

With the loss the Cardinals won the three-game series 2-1, as Daytona dropped to 28-30 and Palm Beach improved to 36-24.

Daytona will now head a few miles up I-95 North to take on the St. Lucie Mets for a three-game set that begins on Thursday night at Tradition Field. The Cubs will send lefty Yorkin Ferreras (3-3, 5.13 ERA) to the hill to make the series opening start.

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
