Okay, does anyone think that the Pirates will EVER do any more trading with the Cubs? I mean, this is comical.

Hendry: "No, Hill and Bruback and PERFECT for your team. We'll just take Aramis (who probably won't amount to much) and Kenny Lofton (who's old any way)."

Littlefield: "Yeah, that sounds okay. Let's do it."

Fast forward two years later. . .

Hendry: "Yeah, about that previous trade. . . I had no idea that it wouldn't work out for you. I'm TOTALLY sorry about that. But, hey, let me make it up to you. How about we give you Gerut for, oh. . . I don't know, maybe Lawton."

Littlefield: "I don't know Jim. This may backfire on me again. Doesn't Gerut have knee problems?"

Hendry: "Come on Warren. We just traded for the guy using our left fielder of the future! In fact, I think you'll be getting the better end of this deal seeing as how we already traded for him."

Littlefield: "All right Jim, just this one time. But I'm going to be upset if something happens. . ."

Hendry: "Warren, I love you like a brother. Why would I go out and hurt you like that?"

I think it was just a cost cutting move for the Pirates. An overpaid veteran for a youngster with potential making league minimum.

You should pose that question on Rivalries. Jake has been practically livid about the moves Littlefield has made to sell out the team.

So how many years until we trade for Bay and give up nothing? 3? 4?

A pirates TV announcer on an interview on ESPN 1000 said it WAS NOT a cost cutting move. They would have let Lawton go anyway because he was a free agent and had already paid most of his salary, plus they picked up more.

It was Gerut for Lawton + Cash if I recall correctly.

Plus I thought I heard a quote from Hendry talking about how Gerut would be a good player for them when healthy next year. My guess is that was the selling point--not what he could contribute this year while still recovering.

That was my opinion too. I thought Gerut was a lousy pickup for a team in need of immediate help, but if he comes to spring training fully healthy then he could be very useful next year. The Pirates were already out of contention for 2005 when they got Gerut so it could still end up a good deal for them and it's way too early to say Hendry fleeced the Pirates.

I dunno that acquiring a guy like Lawton could be considered "fleecing" no matter how little we gave up...
