Why does Andy Masur fill in for Pat Hughes sometimes???

I can understand why he has to fill in for Santo, like today he had to get his "20,000 mile check-up" on his prosthesis. But why does Masur fill in for Hughes for a half inning every game. Is it because Hughes needs a breather from Santo??

Yeah. That's his only time to eat and take a quick break.

Its my understanding that its actually written into his contract that he gets an inning off.

Yes, even Pat Hughes eats, drinks, and pees.

It was always a shame when big plays went down in the bottom of the seventh, as Maser's awful calls were subsequently replayed on ESPN Radio for the next 12 hours or so. Of course, that was when we were good.

 

Maser's a great studio/update man, but I can't imagine him getting a full-time PBP gig.
