The cubs have a pretty decent core of players with Lee, and Ramirez as stapled in the lineup, and a couple studs in the rotation in Prior and Zambrano, not to mention depth behind them.

i think the window for this current swing of talent is about till 2007-2009, but is their a chance baker could still be here then, with a new undeserved contract?

IMO baker has been the luckiest manager in Baseball this year, lucking into win after win, but his luck has seemed to shortened out, and it is time Hendry and the cubs oust him off his respective (or unrespective ;)) rear end, and get a manager who can play to the potential of this team (which IMO is very high).

What do you forsee happening to the current cubs manager position in the next 6 months?

its hard to understand how a team with this muh potential can "lucking into win after win". i would think they have been winning DESPITE baker.

I think Hendry is stuck on Baker. But all is not lost. Hendry has show willingness to let go of players with potential and even players that have gained the City's affection (Fransworth, Sosa-respectively). I would think Baker would pretty much have to tank the rest of the season for Hendry to tell him to hike......

my point was that they were winning DESPITE baker, maybe i didnt word that correctly.

Top of my 2005 offseason wishlist b4 any signings, is to get rid of baker, anxiously awaiting that day.

Baker won't extend his contract here. I think he wants out, but he's too proud to quit, and Hendry won't eat the money by firing him.

Can we start the "Joe Girardi for manager in '07 BandWGN" yet?

I'd still prefer Dierker or Gonzalez to Girardi.

I'd go for all three.

Isn't Girardi being groomed to take over for Joe Torre who is rumored to be close to retirement?

I could go for a 10-game losing streak. I've written this season off, anyway, so it wouldn't hurt for me at all for this team to just totally collapse if it means Dusty is out by Opening Day 2006.

Yes, BUT he and wife Kim are both Northwestern grads, home is in Chicagoland, hometown is Peoria. Give him the money, the chance to put his own staff together, and I think Joe would go for running the show NOW rather than waiting for the Godfather to hang it up.

The thought of it makes me giddy. Especially fantacizing about Ryno as bench coach to boot.

As much as I'd love to see Girardi or Sandberg in the dugout, we all know that coaches are hired to be fired. It would be a sad day in Chicago when Girardi and / or Ryno got the boot.

I like the idea of trying to snag the Gonzales guy from Atlanta.

I like Brenly though too.

has a broadcaster ever jumped from the booth to the dugout b4? Interesting question.

are you kidding me..this isn't the managers fault. you talk about the solid core of players we have and then mention 2 players and 2 pitchers. the problem is that is all we have. nomar could be good but hasn't been healthy for several years. we have youngsters with promise but so far they haven't worked out. i like some of these players but if you are honest, at least 20 teams would never consider switching outfields with us. or 2nd basemen or catchers... etc. we have located a closer but did you realize that EVERY pitcher we started the season with in the bullpen is gone! that is a horrible job of putting together a team. poor decisions from dusty aside, connie mack could not win with this collection. it is .500 team at best. and we all want to blame dusty especially because we are now behind the brewers but the facts are that top to bottom the brewers have better players than we do.

NO but I'm pretty sure Mark Grace would like to be the first...

He's educated(Northwestern grad) and is learning under Torre. However, there's no way any of us can pass judgment on any managerial candidate that hasn't managed yet. We just don't know if they'll do some of the same stupid stuff that Baker does.
