I think today's game caps the height of anger and pessimism. Prior was on the mound, and really everyone expected a well pitched game.

He got batted around, and our main stud gets beaten. I think thats why people are moreso angry today, they expected Prior to be dialed in.

Prior didn't have his best stuff today and Philly took advantage. The pen did come in a shut them down but the hitters didn't take advantage of it. When a pitcher like Prior struggles I'd like to see the team pick him up with some runs but 4 was not nearly enough today to do that. That's what winning teams do IMO, pick each other up and I'm hoping this team will start to do that.

I'm usually pretty optimistic, but in IMO, this team just won't catch Houston. We'll likely fall 6 games behind them today and I don't see us making up that kind of ground. This team is just too inconsistent...they can look real good for a stretch of games and then fall flat on their face. Seriously, it seems like we keep getting 2 or 3 games above .500 and then lose 2 or 3 in a row and fall right back down to that mark. MAYBE things will turn around with the return of Nomar, Williamson and Wood tomorrow but, I don't see Wood doing much for us out of the pen, Baker has said he wants to play Neifi even with Nomar back, and Williamson isn't going to be at 100%. Hopefully they prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

I don't look at it as catching up with any team. I look at it as playing some good baseball and things will take care of themselves. Now I admit they are not playing well but once Wood, Nomar and CPatt are back it should get interesting.

Well, I don't even see them playing better anyways. We're counting on some of these guys helping us when they come back, but there isn't much to make me think that Wood is going to help us much in the 'pen, considering he struggles in the 1st inning. CPatt is hitting .219 in Iowa, so has he really improved since he was sent down? And it sounds like Neifi is still going to play when Nomar comes back, so the SS position might not be looking so good for us after all.

Actually this team is very consistent. It's hovered around .500 for the majority of the season. They've been no more than what? Six games over and no worse than five under all year I think. That's consistent. Mediocre, but consistent.

The fans need to let them have it when they get home. I mean seriously let them have it. They deserve it. Especially Dusty.

But then it'll hurt thier feelings and they'll all run away crying.

Good. Gutless clowns. And Dusty's the ringleader.

^^^^exactly Cuse...

Today was a tad big encourging, because the Cubs got some big hits. They just needed a home run or two, to break it open.

DLee also got a couple of hits, which was good.

We're only 1 game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. Not good.

Maybe if we drop into 4th like the Orioles, the management will get a clue and fire the manager.

But we should move away from always having to rely on the home run to score.

*sigh* This just ain't gettin it done :-(.

I'm not terribly surprised by anything anymore (well except for how we lost yesterday), but I AM continually disappointed.

When I was 18 I used to chuckle after I told someone I was a Cubs fan and they told me I'd never see them win a WS in my lifetime. I turned 42 a few days ago..... I'm getting way too close to being halfway there to suit me!!!

I'd love to see the organization take one series of years and say "to hell with the budget, let's just go out there and sign 2-3 top free agent players and spend a couple years REALLY going for it!!!"

I think they tried that last year. It backfired miserably.

Which top free agents did they go out and sign???

Traded for Derrek Lee, signed LaTroy Hawkins, signed Greg Maddux

That's a huge upgrade for a team that was 5 outs from the WS the prior year.

Ahh ok - I suppose it's in the definition of "top free agents" then because I wouldn't have considered Hawkins or Maddux in that category.

When I say big time free agents, I mean grabbing Manny Ramirez if he is put on waivers again..... signing Johnny Damon as a free agent next year...... finding a big time closer via trade and/or picking up another good starter.

To hell with the budget for a few years - REALLY make a run at winning something for a change. I realize that will never happen as long as the Cubs are run as a business (probably forever) and the fans keep filling up the stadium to see mediocre teams play. All I'm saying is I would like to see that happen someday in my lifetime.

Never gonna happen. The Trib's too damn cheap to eat a contract.

The best we can hope for is that Baker gets busted with a trunk load of weed and tossed in jail.

Didn't they eat Don Baylors? And for that matter Sammy Sosa's?

The trib is eating $12 million of Sammy's contract for this year. Why not eat an extra 4?

True, theres too many guys slumping right now. You have Walk/Burny/Lee not doing too hot.

If one of those guys can get hot, the others will slowly follow suit and our offense might be a little better.

Johnny Damon would be a waste of money. So would Brian Giles.

Typical Cub luck, money to spend in a year when there are zero quality free agents.

I don't think Damon would be a great use of money for the amount he is going to demand either, but you know.... I'm sick and tired of waiting.... I just want to see us field a fricking championship team for once!! Cub fans have waited far too long imho and the ownership owes it to us to do whatever it takes to win - if that means taking on some hefty contracts and losing money for a few years, I could care less - they've been making a heck of a lot of money off the fans and the team for many many years!

I don't know what else to say - I'm just sick to death of year after year of losing!!

The payroll is good enough. I think theres too many people in management that have to make decisions, before Dusty can get fired.

A longer chain of command.

I'm curious on how Hendry really feels about Baker...I mean really feels, not the company line.

100 million payroll. That's so cheap.

It's an 87 million dollar payroll. Calling it a 100 million payroll is another copout by the Trib.

Dusty Baker's not getting fired this late in the season, that would be essentially conceeding defeat (and please dont use the O's as an example because they were in first then fell off the map. A totally different situation). I think the primary reason Dusty wont get fired has to do with Hendry's knowledge of how the team started the year (with holes). It's not entirely Dusty's fault that we have a young and inexperienced bullpen, players aren't getting clutch hits, and that a bat (Nomar's) that we expected to be a very important in the lineup has been MIA. Dusty can be blamed for some strategic errors but I feel the personnel problems outweigh his strategy or lack thereof.
