Just thought I'd share some Peoria info...

First off, Wood looked great. As people have been saying, he worked exclusively from the stretch. His fastball was 96-98, but I think only 2 were at 96, and the rest were 97-98. Slider looked good, made some poor kid look foolish and he just walked back to the dugout.

They didn't give Harvey much to hit tonight, althought he did hit a bomb fould down the LF line. Walked in his first AB, and got hit in his 3rd.

Oscar Bernard looked good behind the plate, had a good-great arm, solid blocking skills...and he actually looked to have solid speed as well when running.

Grant Johnson has a slow delivery, which is the cause for all the SB's...I'm 99% sure that we were sitting in front of his family, because any call that went against them, the one who looked like the mother just exploded. Also bases loaded in the 5th, he got a soft bouncer to 3rd with 1 out, Smith decided he wasn't going to get the runner at the plate and went to 1st with it...she WENT NUTS! I mean she stood up, and screamed HOME!!!!!!!! like 60x. Then she went on and on about how they "teach them these skills in little league" and wow...just absolutely obnoxious. I came VERY close to saying something to her, but just kinda held it in...oh well.

Eric Patterson didn't really impress me, looked bad on a couple of K's (first 2 ABs). He had one play in the field with a guy on 1st. A soft chopper to him, he had plenty of time to make the play at first, but he kept looking back and forth between 2nd and 1st...finally throwing to first but it was a very close play with the runner being called safe. Kind of a mental error there, should have easily had an out. However I did miss his double as we left a bit early.

That's about it, just a few notes I took mentally during the game.

Johnson's got to fix his delivery, or guys will run on him forever. 6 SBs tonight, and it wasn't Bernard's fault.

didn't want to start a thread for this, so I'll thow it here.

just an amusing anecdote and a warning to minor league baseball fans with kids...

this girl I work with has a boyfriend that is an umpire in the Carolina league. everytime there is an incident, he has to write a report. there was a series between Potomac and Winston-Salem this past weekend that was quite contentious between the teams and between the players and the umps.

he emails the reports to his girlfriend and she showed me the ones from this series to me today. what's funny is that he writes things verbatim. no paraphrasing, no editorializing, no censorship. I have never seen so many F bombs on one piece of paper in my life.

parents that are concerned about little kids not hearing curse words are better off bringing them to a Jay and Silent Bob movie than box seats at a Carolina League game.

That's quite funny, actually. I was so annoyed by the people behind us...it was way beyond tolerable...but I managed to just tune them out for the most part. I mean it was like this lady had never watched baseball in her life...or she was just that biased that it blinded her ability to see the plays clearly enough to make accurate judgements...

I mean yelling at the catcher because your son (or whatever he is to her) got stole on because he feels the need to raise his leg 2 feet off the ground before throwing...completely stupid.

Wow, I tuned in after Johnson was out of the game and didn't realize they had stolen 6 bases against him. 5 hits, 4BBs, 6 SBs in 5 innings = only 2 runs, 1 earned.

I *know* I remember people posting before that they thought they were sitting near his mother at games based on her behavior while he was pitching.

I think I was, at the July 4th game in Geneva. Wasn't close enough to hear anything to the extent of the guy above. But she was the only one that cheared when he was announced, she looked worried as he was being smacked around, and she wasn't there after like the 3rd inning (after Grant had left the game).

Johnson got torn up on the bases...very Maddux-esque. His high kick has got to go when he's in the stretch, or he'll continue to be run on all day long.

It wasn't hard to figure out...myself, my uncle, and my two cousins had it figured out by the top of the 1st...(one of the "bad" calls was in the 1st)

One girl who seemed like maybe a sister? kept yelling "Let's go DUB!"...maybe it's cause his middle initial is W  Whatever the reason, she felt the need to do it EVERY PITCH  I can understand being supportive of your child/brother/whatever...but to the point that you make yourself look insane by yelling at umpires and/or his teammates for bad calls/plays?? Come on, that's not helping anyone.

Any idea what Johnsons pitch count was? It seemed like he was running alot of 3 ball counts. Additionally, do you really think Bernards arm is THAT strong? Sure Johnsons delivery was not the best for a catcher, but his transition from catching the ball to throwing the ball looked like molasses to me.

LATE-INNING SPARK KEYS 8-2 CUBS WIN

Daytona Handed Super Fan “Front Row Joe” A Little Present In His 700th Consecutive Game Attended At “The Jack” With Some Late Magic

By Bo Fulginiti

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—On the anniversary of his 700th straight game attended at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, loyal Cubs fan “Front Row Joe” had a lot to celebrate on Tuesday.

The Daytona Cubs made sure that he added a series-opening victory to the list.

In Game 1 of a four-game series against the Clearwater Threshers, the Cubs overcame an early two-run deficit as they surged ahead with seven runs in the final four frames to win by a final of 8-2.

Daytona lefty Chris Shaver (1-0) pitched six solid innings as he gave up just one earned run on seven hits to notch his first Florida State League victory.

The Cubs made their statement in the sixth inning, as they knocked starter Zach Segovia (2-11) out of the game and stormed ahead with four runs on three hits to take a 5-2 lead.

Then Daytona put the game out of reach in the eighth with a bases clearing three-RBI double from Brian Dopirak that gave the Cubs a comfortable six-run cushion they would refuse to relinquish.

Four Cubs recorded multi-hit efforts, highlighted by designated hitter Tony Richie who went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and two runs scored, and J.J. Johnson who laced a double, triple and added a late run in a 2-for-5 night at the plate.

With the win the Cubs improved to 15-22 on the second half, as Clearwater dropped to 14-23 in the Western Division.

The two teams will head back to “The Jack” on Wednesday for Game 2 as the Cubs send lefty Yorkin Ferreras (0-3, 7.52 ERA) to face Threshers righty Chris Honsa (3-3, 4.33 ERA).

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST
