just some food for thought

I think the only players that have to go through waivers are those on the 40 man, and I think the Cubs have a 40 man crunch coming up this off season, so couldn't a package of those players not yet on the 40 man, who would have to be on next year, be used without having to consider the waiver intracacies on the players going to the Reds?

Well, Unless something really really crazy is going on in which the deal has been agreed upon and for whatever reason selig has yet to approve it... i think this deal is dead.

That being said, I forsee alot of waiver moves this year.

Griffey is a guy who would make it through waivers, because of his large contract. I sure would love to see the Cubs get him, however, I think the Cubs are done with deals for the season.

Griffey could get through waivers, but could the players being sent to Cincy get through?

Exactly. I doubt whoever we send them would get through.

First: Cincy would have a HIGHER priority then all but 5 teams. Meaning they would have a very high priority pick.

Second: All the Cubs would have to do is get either Hairston, and/or Patterson to Cincy's pick in the waiver wire, which I am confident we could do. Not to mention a 3rd player could be the INFAMOUS player to named later, which they Cubs would then send in the offseason.

I don't see getting Junior would be all that difficult. If we truly wanted Junior. His contract would ALL BUT GET HIM TO CHICAGO in the waiver wire priority pick.

That is very true. I forgot about priority lists and such.

Here you guys go getting me interested in possible player acquisitions again... we currently have Hairston to play CF, and both Burnitz and Lawton could play it occasionally, if not more, plus Patterson in AAA (he could be used just for his defense and bat him 8th).

Would taking a chance on a "does seem to be" finally healthy Griffey help solidify the OF, defensively AND offensively, and possibly help push us "over the top" for the final 2-month stretch run at the WC? Would acquiring him make sense if we had to assume the majority of his salary? Also, what's his contract status? I'd hate to think that acquiring a guy like Griffey, at his cost, would be basically nothing more than a ~2 month rental.

What kind of lineup would we see if he were acquired?

LF Lawton

2B Walker/Nomar

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Burnitz

CF Griffey

SS Nomar/Walker

C Barrett/Blanco

pitcher

(switch Nomar and Griffey around when facing a LHP)

Put Griffey in the cleanup spot. Griffy > Burnitz. Bat Burnitz 6th.

Do you mean put him in the 5-hole? Griffey is good (when healthy), but I like Ramirez' power+average more - more protection for Lee.

My mind is working overtime here, but a thought concering a possible interest in Griffey and the recent "announcement" of Corey being recalled in a week-to-10 days......

Any chance the Cubs are hoping Corey's bat wakes up a bit to showcase him if wanted to go after Griffey? I know Cincy has a surplus of young OFs already, but I don't really see either of Dunn/Kearns or Pena as quality MLB CFs, at least defensively.

Do they have any stud CFs that are just about MLB-ready?

Put Griffey in the 4 hole and go righty, lefty, righty.

Do you think Patterson would pass waivers??

I guess I'm not sure how the whole waiver system works. Wouldn't Cincy have really high priority, and if they were to claim him, he doesn't have to try and make it through the rest of the teams... would he? Couldn't a deal be made right with Cincy instead of waiting to see if others would claim him?

Does the waiver list go worst record to best regardless of league or does it go worst to first in one league then worst to first in the other league?

If they go thru all the NL clubs first, Cincy would be one of the first teams and theoretically could put in a claim for Corey then the deal could be made.

Assuming Griffey clears waivers too.

(A) If only one claim is entered, the player's contract is assigned to that claiming club.

(B) If more than one club in the same league makes claims, the club currently lower in the standings gets the player.

© If clubs in both leagues claim the player, preference shall always go to the club in the same league as the club requesting waivers.
