seems like a lot to give up for Winn. Essentially similar to our deal for Hawkins. Foppert is a guy who can be good when healthy (was the guy who they didn't want to trade to Baltimore a few years ago in the Ponson deal) and Torrealba is an excellent catcher who will grow into a solid veteran once given playing time. Good Trade for the Mariners.

Oops, I posted in the trade thread which probably needs to be merged, but I do agree that the deal is skewed in favor for the Mariners. Make you wonder though about Olivo or Torrealba getting packed with another player (Moyer?). SD has talked about Moyer for awhile and needs a catcher, but with Park and Ross there now it probably is too late. Does LA make sense? Olivo & Ibanez for a couple of pitching prospects like Houlton and Jackson?

Any word on Winn yet?

The Giants have made a late bid for Randy Winn, offering two mid-level prospects, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

A Mariners source told the paper Saturday that there is a 90 percent chance Winn will be dealt before the deadline. The Mariners will likely recall Chris Snelling after Winn goes. Winn could play center and left in San Francisco. Jul. 30 - 7:41 pm et

Either the West is an absolute joke or Sabean is off his rocker.

Sabean doesn't even have a rocker, the rockers belong to Bonds, Alou, Visquel, and the other geezers on the team.

Thats great! oh....Foppert was BA #5 prospect in 2003.

It's official, Sabean is a moron who i out to destroy the Giants organization. In a matter of 2 yrs, he has traded: Liriano, Nathan, Bonser, Williams, Aardsma, and Foppert for Piernyzki (sp?), Hawkins and Winn. I don't care how anybody---epsecially Sabean---try and spin it, that is ridiculous. I understand Bonds has MAYBE 2 yrs left in him, and the Giants fill obligated to try and win while Bonds is still in baseball, but come on....Foppert, Liriano,Williams,Aardsam were considered to be some of the game's best young arms and ALL that got is a RELIEVER, a catcher who they released, and a journeyman OFer.

I don't know what it tells anybody else, but it reeks of desparation.

Speculation is that Grissom may be released when Winn joins the Giants on Tuesday.

I hope Jim is done acquiring outfielders.

+ Ainsworth for Ponson.

Kurt developed health issues that made that a non-factor, but it was another trade of the future for a rental.

Ah, a kindred spirit. I thought I was the only one who thought that Sabean was among the many dolts who call themselves GM's today. You sum it up well here, and Tim mentioned the Ponson thing. All Sebean ever does is trade young players for mediocrities who don't improve his team. Foppert isn't the darling that he once was, but he still has a good chance of becoming a very good pitcher. Trading him for a guy like Randy Winn, who is an upgrade over maybe 5 or 6 outfielders in the majors is a moronic move. There are probably 50 guys in AAA who are as good as Winn, maybe more.

One other point about the Ponson trade in '03. If I remember right, the Giants were up by something like 10 games in the division when they traded for him, and Ainsworth, Ryan Hannahan and Damian Moss were all good arms at the time. They didn't need him to win the division, and he stunk in the playoffs, which was not an unfathomable occurence. They then failed to offer him arbitration, leaving them with nothing while the Orioles resigned him over the winter. 3 good arms for a pitcher they never needed. Another example of a GM infatuated with "proven veteran" mediocrity. Can we talk to him about Matt Cain?
