Forgive me for posting this if it's already been posted.

How could the Mets get two players that would really help the Cubs - Ramirez and Baez - and only be giving up Cameron and prospects? Why can't the Cubs take the Mets place and give up Patterson and prospects (two from this list: Mitre, Wellemeyer, Pinto, Nolasco, Brownlie, Koronka, Sing).

Thoughts?

Because that list doesn't compare. It's their best outfield prospect and their best pitching prospect. It's the equivalent of us giving up something like Corey Patterson, Felix Pie and Sean Marshall or Rich Hill.

Well to start with, the Mets would be giving up their top two prospects (Milledge and Petit). It could be argued that none of the guys you listed above in your list is even in the Cubs' top 10 prospects. If you wanted the deal to be somewhat comparable, put in Pie and Marshall in place of that list you have above. Then, with Cameron at least you know what you're getting - about 70 walks per year, 20-30 HRs, around an .800 OPS. With Patterson, who knows? His OBP this year was .270 and he isn't even hitting much in the minors. At this point he can't even be considered an average major league player, which at least Cameron is.

As much as I'd love to see Manny's bat protecting Lee in the lineup, it's not gonna happen. Sure, we pulled the trigger on Nomar, but Manny>>>>>>>Nomar.

Not happening, folks. I'll change my username to "Uglyfairywussy" for a month if we land Manny.

I'd gladly do it, but there is about as much chance of the Cubs landing Manny as there is me getting struck by lightning 5 times between now and the trade deadline.

Never say die.

The Red Sox and Mets were working on a deal to trade Manny, minus that 3rd team that was previously involved, TB. But Starks got a phone call shortly ago (he's on BBTN right now) and the caller told him that the new deal is 99.9% dead.

[slip in the backdoor and nab Manny for little in return (respectively) and get them to eat a chunk of his salary, Jim!]

I am not really in favor of Manny. Great run producer, but terrible contract and seems to be a bid on the odd side. I don't want to see another Sammy type situation in a few years. JMHO

Aha. But see, the reason the Cubs are going after Manny now (IF they are) is to help them out down the stretch run this year - mainly offensively - and then next year too. If they feel he's still good enough to keep producing and he's happy enough to keep around, they might look at keeping him for the 2007 season as well, in which he will turn 35. (33 now)

*would be* Remainder of this season's lineup;

CF Hairston

2B Walker

1B Lee

LF MRam

3B ARam

RF Burnitz/Murton

SS Nomar

C Barrett

Boy would it be awesome to have Manny Ramirez in left field. *imagines*... I've done that in MVP Baseball...

Stark, further on the Manny situation; "Its my understanding that Manny will not play in tomorrow's game vs the Twins, again. He went to management and told them he 'doesn't want to play in this atmosphere'".

So, basically, he's still being a "me" guy with the Boston brass. I can't imagine the Red Sox not forcing him to play though if they weren't working on trading him at that time still. I mean, if they knew they were going to keep him and nobody wanted to accept their end of the bargain for MRam, then why not tell him that and say "you're staying put, so get out there."?

[Cubs optimism]

That was my thinking, too. Boston is at the point of no return to trade Manny. Come noon tomorrow if he's still with Boston, I think there will be a mad rush by Epstein to unload him. If Jim is as smart as he seems, I think we see him at the front of that line.[/Cubs optimism]

I don't know. Its just weird that nobody is saying anything about the Cubs being interested in Manny, not even slightly. Weren't our names being bandied about with Nomar at this time last year?

THIS JUST IN:

Red Sox picked up Jose Cruz Jr from Arizona. (he was DFA'd by the Dbacks, wasn't he)? So, is this a precursor to moving Manny? They're certainly not gonna move Damon to another OF spot or sit him to play Cruz, Jr in CF. Can/will JC,Jr play RF? I think the Red Sox are in need of a RFer currently, but I could be wrong in that thinking.
