The Brew crue begins a 4 game set vs. the Red Birds. I'm hoping that they could play for a spilt. This week is a good week which the Cubs can make up some games to narrow the gap. By playing the pesky Reds for 4 and then visting ST. Louis. I hoping that momentum is on ther Cubbie's side.

The starting pitching has gained confidance from crappy hitting teams, which is great going in to the Reds and Cards series. This helps the over all mentality of the team.

The offense is plating runs, which, suprise suprise, wins games. Incredible!

It was a great move by Dusty to take Wood out of the 11-1 game. He has learned from the Prior game in the 2003 series vs. the Marlins.

The pen showed rust. Dusty got them some innings and getting them working in games they couldn't blow. Good for him and the Cubs.

The defense is still on again, off again. Lets hope it don't cost the Cubs game when the pressure really starts to build.

Ya smell that!

It's a penant race just at the beginning of heating up.

The is a fact that pitching leads teams to the playoffs and the Cubs have pitching.

We're not gonna catch the RedBirds. It just won't happen. I hope they Sweep the Brewers, since the brew crew is only 1 game and half behind us. I'm rooting for WC teams to lose now. The only time I want STL to lose is against us.

Well, it's not that it's 100% impossible to catch the Cards. I mean, stranger things have happened. To be quite honest, I would much rather see The Cardinals mow down our competition for the wild card, and us mow them down in our series  Then, if we find ourselves atop the wild card standings and the Red birds in our sight, hey, go for it.

But what I don't want to see happen is us take control of the wild card, and do anything stupid in a futile attempt to win the division. If there are 10 games left, you're 5 up in the wild card, and 4 back from the Cardinals, concede and get your team in playoff shape.

From my point of view. We gain on the Cards with the 2 loses and add more games over Milwaukee with there 2 loses. A sweep either way is fine but it probably isn't going to happen unless Milwaukee thinks their playing the Cubs.

I swear, the Brewers play like a different team when they play the Cubs.

(Although they have been better this year than in years past.)

Yeah seem to get up to play the Cubs damn them. Hope the Reds don't feel that way.

As of today:

Cardinals 59-32

Cubs 46-45

if Cardinals play .500 from here on out, they finish at 95-67.

Just to catch them, the Cubs would have to play .690 ball (49-22) the rest of the way.

Given the level of talent in both of these teams, it is very, VERY, VERY remote that both of those things would happen, let alone ONE of those things occur.

It's not going to happen.

The division race in the NL Central is over, IMO.

Let's go get that Wild Card, and root, root, root for those Cardinals when they are playing everybody but the Cubbies

I would have to kindly disagree that the NL central is over. The Cubs have 14 games aganist the Cardinals, and given the way the Cubs are playing, anything is possible.

It's not over until it's "officially" over IMO.

The reason it's not over is this. The Cards feasted in the first half of the season on weak teams. They didn't play anyone really. They haven't been challenged or gone through adversity like the Cubs have.

The Cubs have a very favorable schedule the rest of the season and the Cards play more talented teams that will challenge them. They lost their outflielder, and Scott Rolen is forever not well. The pitching staff is also playing on borrowed time looking at the injury history of their starters.

I'm optimistic. What a great way to go to the playoffs by catching the hated Cards!

WILDLY optimistic.

Cards (35-35) .500 95 wins

Cubs (48-22) .686 95 wins

While the Cubs can THEORETICALLY catch the Cardinals, its hard to imagine a .650 team slumping to .500 or below AND a .511 team surge to winning more than 2 of every 3. And while some point to the 14 head to head games, its unrealistic to expect the Cubs to dominate that series to the 11-3 or 12-2 that would be necessary to have a significant impact.

The schedules are not that different

Cubs & Cubs play the rest of the NL Central 27 times

Cards play SD/Cubs play PHI

Cards play WAS/Cubs play COL

Cards play FLA 7 times/Cubs play FLA 3 times

Cards play SF 3 times/Cubs play SF 7 times

Cards play NYM 4 times/Cubs play NYM 3 times

The pitching staff is also playing on borrowed time looking at the injury history of their starters.
Doesn't seem to be much basis for that. Does seem a bit ironic looking at the comparitive DL times for the 2 staffs over last season and this season.
