No, not Preston. He was already traded to the Nats, thank God. :D

I mentioned this in the game thread...I'm not sure if anyone has thrown Craig Wilson's name out there as an option for LF. His defense can't be much worse than Dunn's (who, admittedly, I would much rather have).

His power numbers are down a bit this year, but that would seem to be an aberration. And his OBP has always been pretty good, (great this year).

Of course, it all depends on his contract situation. If his contract situation is favorable to us, maybe we could get him without having to give up too much. Just figured I'd throw it out there if it hasn't been talked about already. (If it has been, shame on me for not searching).

I like him, but I've never seen him as an everyday player - I don't know if that's because of constant injuries or how the Pirates tend to use him.

He's one of many arbitration eligible players the Pirates need to make a decision on. He'll be a free agent after the 2006 season. He's earning $3M this season as a 5th year of service player, so he could be in line to earn as much as $5M in 2006. That's a little too much to pay him in my opinion.

Decent idea, but I would aim higher.

I'm going to have to agree. Wilson is an upgrade, but if you want to upgrade I'd go for a larger upgrade.

He's no Dunn, but Dunn might not be available. I'd put Wilson up there with Kearns, if not higher. I don't think there are a lot of available guys who are better. Burrell is, but he's much more expensive contract wise.

You know, I honestly don't mind the idea of Wilson in LF - especially if Murton doesn't pan out (if he gets the chances).

He's a versatile player (1B, LF, RF, C) who admittedly strikes out too much (so he'll fit in perfectly :-P), but he's had a down season and might be available inexpensively in a trade.

He's had decent OBP results and he's still only 28 and should be on the verge of the better years of his career if he can stay healthy.

He wouldn't be that "impact" player we could use in our offense, but I think he'd give us steady results.

The high strikeout totals are the only thing that would scare me away - we really don't need more guys who know how to swing and miss.

For an inexpensive trade package, I'd consider it.

I think the Pirates should have traded Wilson in the offseason. He has major holes in his game (anything offspeed and defense) and last year was his Rick Wilkins year. He'll never be that good again. He'll be servicable, but the Pirates would have been better served trading him to a team for an up and coming LH power hitter last offseason.

the pirates fans may hate us but their front office loves us. we did take 3 players from them for little in return, but we also took 3 pretty big contracts away from a team who was never going to be close with or without this high priced talent! unfortunately for pitt fans they seem to be more interested in the bottom line than winning...i'm pretty sure they will want to dump lawton and wilson...and probably mesa. getting anything for for wilson before they have to pay him 5-6 mil a year would be a huge bonus in their eyes!
