Jim Thome, Reds

He's on the DL with tendinitis in his elbow, and he has a big contract, but Thome is the kind of power hitter several teams covet right now. Philadelphia wants to move the veteran to open up a spot for super prospect Ryan Howard.

Potential Suitors: Cubs, Dodgers, Rangers, Indians

This is bogus. The Cubs would have no interest in Thome. We have our firstbasemen. I could see some interest by the Rangers or Indians if the Phillies want to eat some money on the deal.

Wouldn't Boston make some sense? BOS can't be thrilled with Kevin Millar at 1B. Maybe PHL could sweeten the pot for BOS to take more of Thome's money by also throwing Wagner into the deal.

It might make sense for Boston, but realistically they could throw Olerud or Youkalis at 1B for the rest of the season and be fine. Their REAL #1 need right now is pitching - definitely relief pitching and possibly starting pitching. If Boston trades any of their good prospects, it will be for pitching.

Seeing as Sportsline doesnt even know what team Thome currently plays for, I question their insight into which team he may go to in the future.

Lee is a better 1B than Thome by a lot, so could Thome play CF?

It doesn't look like Thome has much range. Lee's one of the few 1b's in the league I could see playing outfield.

Omg! I didn't realize Thome was having such a poor year. Even Giambi's outproducing him. Seems the Phils will have to eat some of his deal. Jmo but stay away. Thome = Nomar. Basically, money thrown down the toilet.

I think there must be some kind of a snafu. I think that the webmaster switched the pictures of Thome and Dunn but left the write-ups the same and switched who was interested. I don't know, Makes sense?

Nomar, if healthy, would be infinitely better than Thome if healthy. Offensively, and Defensively.

Thome's season is puzzling. Offensively, he was the 4th-best firstbaseman is baseball last year, behind only Albert Pujols, Todd Helton, and Sean Casey (yes, Sean Casey).

In 03, he was behind only Carlos Delgado and Helton offensively.

In 02, he was the best offensive 1B in MLB.

I'm not sure what happened to him this year.

He's been bothered by a combination of back problems (I still think of Hundley) and his elbow. I don't know how much the elbow is impacting that BA, but a lower back problem will mess a swing up...

Thome is getting to that age where a lot of immobile heavy guys tend to slow down a little. The elbow is probably bothering him quite a bit and it just takes longer to heal. Strikes me as an AL type player who could benefit from a DH role.

Wagner comes up a lot, but I agree with Cubzfan64, the Red Sox have no interest in Thome. Besides Olerud/Youk, a lot of us here want Ortiz to play 1st every day, letting anyone else DH.

I really wouldn't want to see the Cubs get Thome. I just don't see him fitting in.
