We need to save money for next season the first player we need to get in Damon. Pay what eveer he wants to get out of Boston. The work on the bullpen. I can only dream of what that would be like having JD in CF.

We could spend our money a lot more intelligently. Damon will be asking for a multi-year contract, and the guy is turning 32 in the fall. He's had some great years, but paying a ton of money to watch a guy age in center field isn't the best way to use our budget.

Won't Pie be ready by 2006?? I think the money should be spent on LF and RF. Sorry all DuBois lovers.

Damon's OPS is .845 right now, which is higher than anyone in the Cubs outfield. I don't think it would be the dumbest idea to sign him and put him in a corner spot, then have him leadoff.

A lineup of:

Damon

Walker/Hairston

Lee

Ramirez

RF

Barrett

SS

could be pretty nasty. Of course if it's Hollandsworth and NEIFI! in those spots, then it would still need some work.

Is it possible Kotsay may be available? What about an outfield that would have Kotsay and Pie in it?

Kotsay really wants to stay in Oakland - and I heard earlier today that they're close to agreeing on terms for a 2 year contract.

No, he probably won't be ready till mid-season.

Damon thinks he's God's gift to baseball - combine that with his agent and there's no way he takes less than a 3 year contract and he'll be asking for at least 10 mil per season.

No way I sign him for that - spend the money elsewhere

Oh, and if I had to bet money on where Johnny Damon will be playing next year, I'd put my money on the Yankees. He gets to continue developing his "celebrity" status while playing for a team that might be desperate enough for a CF to overpay him and sign him to a long term contract.

Hey, somebody's thinkin'!

There is no reason I can think of not to take a well-intentioned run at signing Damon to a 3-year contract with a mutual option on a 4th year if he will accept such an offer. The Cubs need table setters, badly. He is the best one on the market. There is no reason why Damon couldn't play CF for one or two years until Pie is ready, assuming that Corey is gone by next year, and then switch to LF. Damon can lead-off and lead-off well, that is worth a lot especially to a team with the OBP problems and the plethora of sluggers the Cubs have.

Open your minds, people. Let's see if the Cubs can't get this guy to sign a 3-year contract.

Where else should the Cubs spend their money? Who do you want? Who is going to help the Cubs more than a lead-off hitter with a very good OBP?

I haven't even begun to look at what other options may be out there, I just know that Damon has had a career year and half and his value has never been as high as it will be at the end of this season. The last thing I want to do is sink a minimum of 10 mil per year (and if I had to guess, I'd say he'll be shooting for 12+ per year) for 3-4 years on him.

Call it a gut feeling more than anything, but I think JD is overachieving and will likely regress as he going from age 33 to 37 in the next 4 years.

I don't have an answer right now - I just don't think it would be well spent money as it fixes only one spot on a team that has alot of problems to fix and fixes that spot in an uneconomical way imho.

I can - he said he wants a five-year contract, and has indicated that he will only take less years for Boston. Other teams are going to be throwing five-year contracts at him, let's not waste time going after him in the off-season when other teams are going to be making the effort to sign him long-term.

No need to apologize. He came up and didn't produce. There's no reason the Cubs shouldn't be looking for someone to take over LF.

It was a beautiful dream once. And if he can go down the Iowa and get his swing back, maybe he can claw his way back and become our leftfielder of the future.

Regarding Damon, I think our money can be better spent on someone younger and cheaper. He's had a few good years, but as someone said, he thinks he's God's gift to baseball, and he's going to want a fortune. There has to be a cheaper younger version of him out there somewhere. And hopefully Hendry will find him.

I don't necessarily think it's fair to say Dubois is dead since he had .761 ops in 142 at bats. Unfortunately, I'm not the Cubs, so we'll probably just cut him.
