We trade players who are playing well enough to help another team. I think that means Burnitz, Rusch and Hollandsworth, maybe Dempster too but I'd really need something for a guy who looks like a legit closer.

LF Hairston Jr

2B Walker

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Dubois

CF Patterson

C Barrett

SS Cedeno

Blanco

Macias

Perez

Grieve

Kelton

Wood*

Prior

Zambrano

Maddux*

Williams

Wuertz

Ohman

Novoa

Remlinger

Wellemeyer

Mitre

Leicester

(*I'm sure Maddux would have no problem landing in SD or ATL. *If Wood is willing to go to Texas or elsewhere, that's fine too.)

By moving Burnitz and bringing up Grieve you open a spot in AAA for Murton. Nolasco has been consistantly good pitching in AA and Pinto is about ready for a 2nd look at AAA as well.

If we don't pull out of this tail spin (2 more vs ATL then 3 vs FLA) then we sell, play kids and promote so we can evaluate.

By moving Maddux the Cubs save $6-9 million for next year. Rusch or Mitre can be plugged in as the 5th starter and be just as effective.

It's time to start restructuring. If the team falls apart, so be it. Maybe Baker will be fired as a result. If the team pulls it head out, that's great too.

Send Maddux and maybe even Burnitz to Anaheim. They have some real good prospects and it appears Escobar's going to be out for a while, if not the entire season.

I'm in agreement that the core of this team needs one or two more significant pieces. However, I think it's unlikely we'll raise the flag overtly enough to trade our excess parts.

Burnitz got no offers this offseason except ours, so I'm not sure how much we'll get for him. If he returns someone like Dubois - a guy who's probably a AAAA type - then it's a trade of little consequence.

Maddux has good value, but it's questionable that we'd find a team that wanted him, offered enough, AND that he wanted to go to.

Dempster would bring something, but he's got such a short track record that his is not a typical closer's value. If he put in another 3 weeks of effective closing, then his value goes up a touch -- but if that did happen, we're probably still around .500 and trading him won't happen.

Cedeno probably won't start until Neifi hits under .230. He hit .229 for June, but Dusty will ignore that. Ronny probably rides the pine until August, then Nomar is back for his contract drive, and we still have little idea if Cedeno can play.

Since Dusty said LF is the "most difficult OF position" (um, what?), I think Hollandsworth's glove will keep him in the lineup, no matter how ordinary his offense is. Hairston should have been leading off and playing there for weeks now - no reason to expect that will change. Probably won't trade Holla since Dusty thinks he has no other viable LF'ers.

In the pen, Leicester, Wellemeyer, Ohman, and Novoa should be competing for at most two spots. Leicester isn't getting it done in AAA, so I don't factor him in at all at this point. Novoa and Welly are filler guys until they prove otherwise.

To really contend, I think about 4 or 5 of the guys in that final roster would need to be in AAA.

I don't necessarily disagree for part of it, I just suspect we lose the next 5 and are done.

Burnitz, I believe, has a one year gig.

Holly gives a team a LH bench bat who can play LF, RF & 1B.

Rusch is a 5th starter who can go the pen in the playoffs without multiyear baggage.

Dempster has the most value.

Also, if we trade Burnitz for another Dubois we dump some salary and get choice (Dubois or another Dubois) next year. That would really suck and wouldn't be worth pursuing.

i don't see burnitz as being wanted. not amny teams are struggling at of so badly that burnitz would be help.plain and simple he isn't that good. holla would be more likely because he is cheaper and can be a bat off the bench and spot starter. i don't see someone paying burnitz 5 mil to spot start. maddux could be an option if someone needs to stabilize a staff for the stretch run.

remingler may have a chance too. for whatever reason teams keep wanting lefties..even bad ones. remember the yanks grabbed heredia!

beyond that it may be luck of the draw on an injury that happens to a team. we really only have aram, lee and barrett that could help someone.

obviously pitching is better but i wouldn't want to lose dempster, prior,z and if wood went it would have to be for value!

I don't see Maddux being wanted. Rising ERA's his last 3-4 years, getting really roughed up as of late, and pretty much a given for $9 million next year. Maybe SD would take him because of their ballpark that doesn't allow as many HRs. But the way Maddog has been pitching I'm not sure that Petco is large enough to contain his misguided curveballs.
