This news seems unfortunate for the Cubs.  Boyd had the highest inning total of his career in 2025 (including playoffs) and more than double any single season since 2019.  He showed signs of wearing down at the end of the year and now will be throwing even earlier in 2026 for the World Baseball Classic.  At best, this is not ideal.

Matthew Boyd backing out of pitching an inning in a July AS game so he could be fresh for October is the same reason he shouldn’t be pitching several games at the WBC 2026, which ends two weeks before the regular season begins

Its spring training time. He probably won’t pitch any more innings in the WBC then he would in spring training. To me it is NBD. I am just surprised he is someone they even want on the team.
