It's not a good spring to be an ankiel.

You can't follow up the Eckstein post with a poor effort like that.

The P-J Star"] OUCH: The banged-up Chiefs lineup won't be getting help anytime soon from projected cleanup hitter Ryan Norwood.

Norwood severely sprained his ankle in a collision at second base during an exhibition game against Bradley two days before the season opener. At the time, the Chiefs projected Norwood would miss 6-8 weeks.

But based on medical reports from the Cubs, Garcia said the right-handed slugger probably won't return to the Chiefs until after the Midwest League's first half, which ends June 19. ...

"We thought he'd help us out in the middle of the lineup, especially with some power numbers," Garcia said.

The Chiefs have dealt with injuries to their entire right side of the field - and three of their top hitters - with second baseman Eric Patterson (hamstring) and right fielder Harvey (back) also out.

Ryan Norwood update.

Peoria Journal-Star"]LOST SEASON: First baseman and cleanup hitter Ryan Norwood's entire 2005 season will consist of an exhibition game against Bradley in April and instructional-league action in the fall.

Norwood hurt his ankle against Bradley two days before the season and initially was supposed to miss a few weeks. Several times throughout the season, the Chiefs heard Norwood was close to arriving back in Peoria.

Every time, Norwood suffered a setback in his rehabilitation.

"He'll be 100 percent for instructional league," said Oneri Fleita, the Cubs' director of player development. "That's going to be his year. It's unfortunate. He basically lost a year."

Fleita said that doesn't mean Norwood will return to Peoria to open 2005. If the 22-year-old makes an impression this fall and next spring, he could make up for lost time.

"I'm not going to punish him for being hurt," Fleita said.
