The rules are, what? SEC, B1G, ACC and Big XII champs, one from Group of Five, then the rest at-large? So 5 autos and 7 wildcards?

As it stands, yes. There was some talk this offseason about a 14 team monstrosity that would've had at least 11 auto bids (3 each for the big two, 2 each for the middle two, and a G5) and guaranteed the big two the byes, as if they wouldn't get the byes anyway, but it didn't get anywhere. We're likely headed to something dumb like that, though.

The top 4 ranked conference opponents get the top 4 seeds. So, if we use the latest AP poll as a proxy for the tournament committee’s rankings, you have getting first round byes:

#1 Oregon

#2 Georgia

#3 Miami

#4 Iowa St

Then you get the next best conference champ and 7 at large teams ranked by the committee  Again, using the AP poll as a stand in:

#5 Penn St

#6 Ohio St

#7 Texas

#8 Tennessee

#9 LSU

#10 Clemson

#11 BYU

#12 Boise St

Wait, a conference commissioner is politicking for his conference?! WHAT IN TARNATION?!

There is room between 'politicking for my conference' and 'literally every at-large bid to the playoff should be a team from my conference.'

I saw a report that the QB from Texas is sitting out the rest of the season to focus on the draft? I don't know if it's true or not. If so, pretty crazy.
