That's a high AAV for Snell, but likely not a great deal for him.  He gets a large guarantee for 1-2 years, but he needs to continue performing at a very high level to earn another big contract after this one.  Boras lost this one even moreso than the Bellinger deal.

Yup, definitely couldn't have afforded what is essentially a one year deal for a front of the rotation pitcher this team likely needs.

Definitely an embarrassing offseason for Boras. He’s getting decent AAV but in general I’m guessing his clients wanted more years and for whatever reason this wasn’t the offseason to be looking for a mega contract.

I mean, sure, we know the Ricketts family can afford it.  But also, let's not pretend like adding $31M over the luxury tax is nothing.  It's only one or two years, but factor in the tax and the Cubs would probably be paying him close to $50M a year (and I don't think Snell is worth that).

And? It's not like the Cubs needed to get under the cap to reset penalties,  nor will they likely go over next year.

That said, they all have opt outs, so it might be the Cody/Snell/Chapman/Montgomery show again next off-season
