Is there a way to opt out of these? Not really any harm but completely pointless.

Brock will know for sure, but from what I can see you can't opt out of earning them, but you can choose not to be notified about them.  To change that, go to your notification settings and turn off notifications for 'Achievements':

What Brock said in another thread about having obscure, random badges out there has me intrigued, and I'm keeping the notifications on
