Ed Howard's ugly start offensively looks twice as bad to me, since I admittedly bought into some of the preseason "elite prospect" hype.

I kind of wonder what the league wide numbers look like. Because it seems like all of our hitters at MB are struggling, and also seemingly all of our pitchers are missing a ton of bats. Even the guys who are non prospects or only sort of prospects. May be that this is the portion of the minor league ladder most feeling the lost 2020.

It's a little much to supposedly buy in and then duck out after a week of games

Also also the LEAGUE K rate right now is 31% and pitchers in the league on average are more than half a year older than the average hitter (22 YO v 21.4). Howard's one of the 5 or so youngest players in the league, didn't play any official games last year

Not at all. It's, of course, semantics but the truly "elite" prospects don't look overmatched at the plate in A ball, regardless of their age. Maybe they have an off game, but not a week and a half of offensive ineptitude. For some reason I threw caution and common sense out the window this offseason, and just allowed myself to dream that Cubs finally got one of those "elite" guys that would push the envelope and force the organization to promote him early. I know better, but hope springs eternal and all that.

This isn't to say that Howard can't become an awesome player, obviously. I still like him a lot. But the scouting reports of "needs to refine his offensive game" seem to be prophetic at this point.

Those blasted pitching labs are ruining baseball. We think it's bad in MLB and the rate is a whopping 25% lower. That's nuts.

So....is Chase Strumpf hurt? This will be his fourth day off in a row.

I think he was scratched late from the lineup the first of those four days so probably. No idea what it is but hopefully it's not serious since he isn't on the IL.

It’s only 26 PAs but Miguel Amaya has struck out only 3 times (5 walks, .910 OPS).

It’s actually 6 Ks, but that’s not so bad and I like the walks. It also seems like his defensive game is on point this year

So it is. I was looking at the RBI column, apparently.

I see what Pete Crow-Armstrong, Jordan Walker, and Robert Hassell are doing early in their debuts and get a little jealous. Of course, none of them are an obvious plus defensive SS with projection for days as younger folks might say, but at least two of them are really good defenders at their respective positions and Hassell, who I legit said should bulk up and play 1B lol wtf, looks like a potential Yelich-esque player

OTOH Mick Abel and Jared Kelley haven't come out lighting the world on fire, neither has Torkelson, and I have pretty much the same conviction with Kelley as I do Howard. Shockingly, very shockingly, the pre-draft hysteria about Kelley's breaking ball seems overblown

The reason I tempered my expectations on Howard - on top of losing his whole senior year - is that he's a cold weather kid while PCA, Walker and Hassell are all from warm weather climates (Zac Veen too but he's off to a bad start too).
