isn't Hikaru suppose to be the best bullet player in the world?

At 1/0, yes, Hikaru is probably best. At 1/1, it's close to a toss up. I was also wrong. Hikaru hat a two point lead halfway through the 3/1 portion. Magnus brought it to level going into the final 1/1 segment. And since Hikaru had a won game to send it to extras, missed his best move, and Magnus won with an insane double rook sacrifice to force mate, I'd say it's still unclear who the better player is.  It was amazing match.

Kramnik being hyper-focused on cheating and indirectly accusing people like Naka of cheating against players rated 400 points lower (while streaming) makes me wonder if the old toiletgate controversy had merit. He doth protest way too much.

Speed chess champions are back around with the semifinals today. Nakamura vs Firouzja going on right now, long-awaited Carlsen vs Niemann later.

The technical issues with the broadcast are piling up, but I have to admit this is way more entertaining than classical.  Waiting 20 minutes for a single move just isn't fun.

Firouzja is in real good shape as I type, up 3 about halfway through the match.  Everyone assumes Nakamura can make it up in the bullet section but I'm not so sure.

Edit: Damn, 20 minutes later and it's gone from 3 to 6 points before we even get to bullet.  FIroujza is blowing him off the board.  This feels like when the old champion boxer finally loses it and just gets pummeled.

In the fallout of the cheating accusations a few years ago, Nieman has carved out a role for himself as an internet troll bro darling, saying pointlessly stupid things in the name of "controversy" and insisting that he's being blackballed from top events because they're scared of him and not because he's a fringe superGM with a history of cheating.

Carlsen is absolutely carving him up and it's so satisfying.

Yeah, I caught the first time control live before I had to return to real life. Watching Hans sweat through shirt and storm off the stage was excellent.

That about sums today up
r/chess - Two very different expressions during Hans vs Hikaru

I missed this.  What was it?

Also, watching Hans lose to Naka was even more satisfying than watching him lose to Carlsen. He's just so perfectly unlikable. Better than an action movie villain.

That sucks that I can't find it again. It was Niemann looking absolutely shook and Nakamura mogging.

I generally find this thread fun, it seems like chess has weird like, professional bowling type personalities, but I do not speak this language and the last few posts really show it

not our fault we didnt do that GIF

Oh, It's definitely not. I was just giving you, or rather the Alekhine, a hard time for no good reason. It along with your play ( until the very-very end ) seemed perfectly fine. At least to my less skilled eye.

Yeah, I played just about like I always do until the last three moves. Such a choke job. Would have been my highest rated win by a good 200 points. Just disgusting.

Thanks for telling it to me in bowling haha

My favorite part of the gif is the observing woman's face being blurred out. Can't be associated with that!

And yeah, you nailed it with the pro bowling personalities. There is an issue, however, with the current world championship.  In addition to not being the best players, they are nice guys. A young polite Indian kid, and a Chinese dude battling depression. I want Kingpin antics!  Like one guy hiring a hypnotist to stare at his opponent from the crowd. (Which happened in the 70s)

I played in the state Blitz championship a month ago, and got off to a scorching start.  Won three in a row, and beat a 2000+ rated with (with my Grob, no less!) and was starting to convince myself I had a minuscule shot at winning.  That was not the case. I was paired with Sullivan in the next round, and got bamboozled in an end game where I had a better position (out of an Alekhine Def, of course) where he sac'd two minor pieces to promote a pawn.  Fancy horsefeathers.
