Jared Young hit a triple, Made and Nwogu each went 1/3 with a BB and K. Hudson, Remy, Reid and Leeper combined for 14 K.

Also of note:

In adition to the 22 pitchers originally on the Cubs AZIL Active List roster plus RHP Manuel Rodriguez (right biceps strain last March) and LHP Brad Wieck (wearing a brace on his left knee) who are on the Cubs MLB 60-day IL and are rehabbing at AZIL, the Cubs have added four additional pitchers to their AZIL Active List roster:

RHP Josh Burgmann

RHP Chris Clarke

LHP D. J. Herz

RHP Michael McAvene

For those of you wondering about catcher Ronnier Quintero (the Cubs #1 IFA signing in the 2019-20 ISP), he participates fully in pre-game and Camp Day work-outs and he catches bullpens, and while he has been the bullpen catcher at every AZIL game he has not yet played in a game.

As a catcher he has a lot to learn, and the Cubs would prefer that Quintero mainly concentrates on receiving and learning how to work with pitchers right now. He can learn about hitting and baserunning later.

Someone to keep an eye on in 2021 is RHRP (ex-1B) Jerrick Suiter.

He was selected by the Cubs from the Pirates in the AAA Phase of the 2019 Rule 5 Draft and the Cubs immediately converted him from a mediocre AA first-baseman to a full-time pitcher, having seen him throw garbage innings in blow-outs for the Pirates AA Altoona affiliate in 2019.

And Suiter has looked very good so far at instructs, mixing a 95-97 MPH FB, a mid-80's CH, and an 81 MPH CV, all of which he can throw for strikes. He is a "wide-body" type (6'3 250+) and he has the stuff you look for in a high-leverage and/or late inning reliever.

Nwogu went 2/4 with a BB, Strumpf went 2/4 and Perlaza went 2/4 with a triple and homer.

I have to admit to being irrationally excited about Nwogu.

Yeah I think he could be Hunter Renfroeish but a better fielder/base runner. I also am a bit irrationally high on Strumpf, I think there’s a second division starter/really good utility guy in there.

Matt Mervis homer and Alfonso Rivas went 2/2 with a double and single in intrasquad game.

A number of AZIL games (including Cubs games) have been canceled over the past couple of weeks as the result of teams (NOT the Cubs) receiving positive CoViD-19 test results (at least one of the teams has shut down completely and canceled all of their remaining games).

The way things are going, the Cubs might not be able to complete what remains of their AZIL schedule.

Details on Hudson, Hearn, Quintero, Howard and Roederer in there.

Arizona Phil adds on about Hudson: https://www.thecubreporter.com/comment/268353#comment-268353

I can confirm that Bryan Hudson is indeed hitting 94-95 with his FB with some cutting action that bores-in on RH hitters.

He easily retired seven of the first eight men he faced Friday (F-7, K, BB, 5-3 - 5-3, K, K - F-7) on only 30 pitches, before suddenly losing it and getting creamed (2B, BB, 2B, 3B, WP) as his FB velo suddenly dipped two or three ticks and he could no longer command his secondaries (CV and CH). This was also the case in his previous two outings (dominant first inning then struggled through two more innings in his first outing, and then same thing again in his second outing -- a game he started).

I remember back in the day when the 6'8 lefty was a young struggling extreme ground ball SP with a 90 MPH sinker who couldn't throw strikes consistently and who labored to get through a multi-innng outing, but now I would project him as a legit one-inning (or 25-30 pitches over parts of two innings) LHRP with possible MLB upside.

CRUNCH: Christopher Morel isn't injured. He participates fully in BP, infield practice, and baserunning drills. He just isn't playing in games. That could be an indication that he is altering his swing and/or approach at the plate, and when players are doing that they usually don't play in games until they have mastered the change(s).

I believe Ed Howard IV, Edmond Americaan, and Fabian Pertuz might be doing the same thing.

Felix Stevens was working in the cages with coaches for about three weeks before he finally started playing in games last week. (Stevens is a big dude ex-RHP from Cuba with plus-power and a plus-arm from RF).

Jared Young (lower body) and Yohendrick Pinango (shoulder?) are definitely injured, though, They both got hurt running the bases (Young) or sliding into a base (Pinango) in games a week or so ago (I can't remember which games).

I'm a bit worried this is because he's been beating up on guys a few years younger than him in Instructs, but still nice to see

Chase Strumpf, 2B, Cubs

Strumpf began showing opposite-field home run power during instructs while maintaining the calm, controlled approach extolled by scouts since he was drafted. He led all Cubs' hitters in hits, runs, home runs and OPS and showed just enough defensive ability to solidify his longstanding projection as a potential bat-first, everyday second baseman.

Andy Weber, SS, Cubs

A fifth-round pick out of Virginia in 2018, Weber fits the Tommy Edman/Jake Cronenworth mold of college infielders who get overshadowed by bigger or toolsier players but end up having more substantial careers. He showed himself to be a capable defensive shortstop during instructs with the body control, athleticism and actions to stay at the position in addition to a solid internal clock and the ability to make throws on the run. He earned consistent grades as an average hitter and flashed surprising power for his size and swing. Evaluators mostly see Weber as a future utilityman, but he seems to continually improve and has a chance to grow into a regular.
