21. Chicago Cubs

Pick: Anthony Solometo, LHP, Bishop Eustace (NJ)

Solometo was in for a private workout. South Alabama outfielder Ethan Wilson also needs to come off the board somewhere in this range but we haven’t been able to attach his name to any club.

In the comments after the actual Ethan Wilson pick, they mentioned that James Wood has a huge price tag. Probably takes him off the board for the Cubs, if he was ever on it.

Today, Kiley McDaniel also mentioned Wood as one of the more likely well thought of prep guys making it onto campus.

21. Chicago Cubs: Izaac Pacheco, 3B, Friendswood (TX) HS

I’d heard them heavily on Will Taylor, but he’s going to be long gone. Their approach seems to be more for high-upside high school position players, which could mean Pacheco, Allen, Braden Montgomery (if he’d sign), or maybe Tyler Whitaker.

21. Chicago Cubs

Jay Alley, OF, John Carroll

The Cubs have been a difficult team to track down this cycle, but most smoke has the team attached to a high-upside high school player. Anthony Solometo and Maxwell Muncy have been popular connections, as has Bubba Chandler. Allen’s game went to a new level this spring as he’s become way more physical at the plate.

I’m loving all the prep hitter chatter. Please avoid that 2nd tier of college pitchers in the 1st. They have not treated the Cubs kindly.

I’m a huge fan as well, but I’m very wary of Pacheco. That contact rate on the showcase circuit was a ghastly 54%. That’s data from 2020, but it’s one of the best equalizers in comparing HS players.

But I am digging Lonnie White Jr., Jay Allen, Jackson Linn, Tyler Whitaker that are being linked to the team if the Cubs are looking at prep OF.

Anyone willing to share any tidbits from Kiley McDaniel's mock that was posted to ESPN+? Curious to see what he thinks.

Meh:

21. Chicago Cubs

Jud Fabian, CF, Florida

The Cubs are also looking at Trey Sweeney, Frank Mozzicato and Colson Montgomery along with Fabian, who may be asking for mid-first-round money and is seen as a threat to return to school.

So Law says we're going high school hitter, Kiley says college bat, and BA gives us a college arm but doesn't really claim a strong stance on our preferences, and FG does similar but with a high school arm

This is a really far cry from the Wilken and McLeod eras where the national guys were pretty plugged into their preferences.

Fangraphs Day Of Mock Draft: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/mock-draft-3-0-the-morning-of/

21. Chicago Cubs

Pick: Will Bednar, RHP, Mississippi State

Most Cubs rumors revolve around high school players, including high school lefty Anthony Solometo, who reportedly wowed the team in a private workout, as well as the top high school catchers in Harry Ford and Joe Mack. Bednar made a slow and steady climb on draft boards this spring, and then rocketed up them during the college postseason, thanks to one of the better sliders in the draft.

According to that link, Bednar has a price tag of $3 million which works for the Cubs.

Other players who’ve been linked to the Cubs recently: Colson Montgomery went 11, Harry Ford 20, Joe Mack 22, Anthony Solometo 23, Jay Allen 26, James Triantos 31 and Jud Fabian 32.

Bednar would be fun, but my assumption was the crazy run he's been on the last month+ leapfrogged him right past us. I think him and Ford are the two guys I'm most hoping for. Unlikely we get either, but not totally unreasonable. Kind of like Ed Howard last year where it takes like two teams ahead of us going rogue and picking someone way down the board.

BA keeps giving the Cubs McGreevy. This might be their final mock unless they hear major changes up top.

The Cubs have been tied to a wide range of demographics and players but McGreevy seems like one of them so we’ll stick with that pick again here.

Callis/Mayo mock: https://www.mlb.com/amp/news/mock-draft-who-will-be-selected-tonight.html

21. Cubs:

Callis: Colson Montgomery, 3B, Southridge HS (Huntingburg, Ind.)

This is where the first-round projection starts to get a lot more murky. The Cubs could deal a blow to their crosstown rivals by taking Montgomery, the favorite to go one pick later to the White Sox if he's there. They're on several bats, including Taylor and Sweeney, and could be the ceiling for Florida outfielder Jud Fabian.

Mayo: Will Bednar, RHP, Mississippi State

Another college arm could include Michael McGreevy and they could have interest, like a lot of teams in this area, in Colson Montgomery.
