Kendall Graveman made a rehab start in the AZL. Thats a 2020 depth, like the 7-8th SP, signing I can see turning out well if they pick up the option

Yeah I’d assume he takes Mills spot next year since Mills is out of options and will probably be sent out over the offseason. Good to see him back pitching already, should be able to have a normal offseason for him and hit ST running. Adbert/Graveman/Chatwood/Rea is about as solid a group you can ask for as the 6-9 starter/long man options next year, I think we’ll find a 5th starter that’s a safer bet than any of them. Even if it’s like a Gio González cheap type to start the year.

Graveman was a guy I really wanted prior to the 2018 season. Obviously you worry about any guy coming off of TJ, especially when they weren't exactly a star prior, but I agree I love him as depth.

This is not a comp but purely a discussion of aesthetics, but that looks very Bellinger-y

Someone mentioned a Bellinger-Benintendi hybrid type swing on twitter I saw, again not a comp to what he can be (though he’s gotten Benintendi comps), but I can see that in the swing a bit.

I want Cole but lol, the draft pick will give them their excuse

For sure they'll look to keep that group 6-9 and get an established 5th starter like Gio Gonzalez or Kyle Gibson. Ownership will want someone good, pitched for competitors or something, but not too good. The Winning Cubs usually carry 6 guys who can start on the ML roster and are pretty slow to give inexperienced innings unless the team needs it or the pitcher earns it so I imagine ideally Alzolay is no higher than 7th in the pecking order to open 2020 barring him blowing up in September and October. If Graveman can make it 8 before they go to a MiL that would be convenient. Not nearly as sweet as landing Cole

I want Cole too but I just don’t see it. I think Chatwood will be moved for minimal savings or kept in a similar role so he’s 6, Graveman/Adbert/Rea is 7-9, then they’ll sign or trade for the 5th starter needed. Maybe it’s Hamels back (that scares me but if he’s cheap I guess it’s okay) maybe it’s a cheap option like Gio, there are lots of cheap/mid level type FA SPs (Gibson, Chacin, Keuchel, Odorizzi, Pineda, Roark are all guys that shouldn’t cost a ton but are solid). No idea who to target or who’s be available in trades (can worry about talking about that in 2-3+ Months).

Lot of interesting things yesterday. Both Chicago and Iowa won 1-0, Iowa threw a 1-hitter.

Speaking of Iowa's pitching ( :D ), I have a teaser alert. Maples and Norwood are on good rolls. For both of them it's about controlling their ++ stuff, and they've been doing that as of late. Maybe they've figured something out?!?

Norwood's last five games: 6.2IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 11K.

Maples' last seven games: 11IP, 4H, 1R, 2BB, 15K.

Both of the have had a lot of 1+ inning outings. Maples has actually had a lot of 2-inning outings.

We'll see how they finish out over the next ten days. As we've seen all season, soon as we get a little hopeful about a pitcher in Iowa, they get obliterated. Yet, if they can continue this roll to the end, they could be very helpful for Chicago in September.
