I know that we’re pretty spoiled

They’ve been incredibly successful for a multi-year time horizon. I know cynic/nihilist is the default state for many, but it’s not out of place to point out when hand-wringing the choice of 4th outfielder.

by far the richest team in the division won the division twice in ten years.

If you’re gonna be intellectually dishonest, at least it’s good to be really obvious about it?

Psst. Ian Happ isn't that good

He’s been worth 3.3 WAR in two seasons he’s played as a 22 and 23 year old. He’s good, he needs to improve in areas but he’s good and given the options we have for the 12 position players to make the OD 25-man he deserves to be on it. I’m glad we’re making these guys be more accountable/needing to show improvements but it’s hard to see they’re doing that when Almora and Caratini are just basically handed jobs when they’re not as good as Happ and have been worse than him recently. Seems like rules are being applied to guys differently.

Averaging less than 2 WAR per year is not good. I don't care how old he is. If he sucks, send him down. Don't let him work out his mechanics in important games.

I'm fine with this thinking and running the team this way, if you suck and have options you go down to figure it out. But given the current options we have for the 12 position players to start the year I find it hard to believe he's not one of the best 12 options. Just seems if they are going this route they aren't applying the rules to every player the same and it makes this joke of an offseason an even bigger joke if they weren't at least brining in vets on cheap/MiLB/invite deals to compete for spots with the younger guys at the minimum.

Also, and it's just interpreting tweets so who knows exactly, but it seems like they blindsided Happ with this and handled it poorly. For a team that prides itself and brag about how well they treat and communicate with guys it seems like they should've handled this better to let it be known to him this was on the table weeks or months ago if x, y, z things weren't fixed/worked on/showed improvement out of him.

It does seem a bit backwards but I also feel like they're doing this because Happ still has actual upside with power and patience at a variety of positions. There's only so much to unlock with Almora. Still shocked by this though. There were moments the last two years I (and a lot of people) thought Happ would get sent down yet they stuck with him. I also think Descalso factors into this in that he's not just a Seal Boy replacement; dude's actually gonna start quite a bit.

There's also the fact that, of the guys you could send down, he's had easily the worst spring. Since you can't send Heyward down, Happ gets the short straw.

The FO has to prove why he was our big FA signing.

That's certainly a way to gloss over the state of the team and how his role potentially shapes out.
