I am not a swing doctor, but my understanding is Heyward's primary issue is timing. There is some concern about his old wrist injury hurting him against velocity, but everyone does worse against velocity and he hasn't been feasting on junkballers. That means that whatever gets him on time is good, which could but doesn't have to involve his swing as a whole changing.

I think timing is a part of it, but the swing itself is also bad. Doesn't use his lower half properly. The swing plane looks off. Doesn't use his wrists/hands enough to adjust the bat through the zone.

Some posters here are claiming it's always been garbage, but that's not true. It actually looked good at times when he was in Atlanta. His swing has changed a lot over time. I think it even looked okay when he was with the Cardinals, but I only remember the NLDS series now.

Please find examples of it not looking terrible, thanks.

Dude that didn't even take me that long to find lol. This swing looks very different from his current swing.

You're welcome  . So dumb...

Spoiler: it's the same damn swing.

No, it's not. The one with the Cubs is worse. He utilizes his wrists more and his feet aren't sliding or moving in the clip with the Braves. It's a better swing in the top video. He does occasionally look okay in his swings with the Cubs btw. It's not always terrible. When he isn't locking up his arms and keeps it bent and attacks the ball it looks fine actually.

Eh; at worst it looks like a barely worsened version of already flawed mechanics. Once he came to the Cubs they tried to do, what, add a timing mechanism? I don't remember ever seeing/hearing of them trying anything else new when he showed up compared to what he was doing before he signed with them.

Also he's more closed-off in his stance while with the Braves in the top clip. He has more of an open stance in the clip with the Cubs. Not sure why it's so different or when that changed. He definitely doesn't use his hips and lower-half like he did while with the Braves.

Just based off watching a bunch of clips, I almost think he'd made little tweaks to his mechanics almost every single season.

You're not wrong. I've noticed the same thing. Sometimes they're not little tweaks either. His swing in 2016 was BY FAR the worst version...

Hey, maybe you can actually start judging a swing now! Honestly, I'm no swing doctor or expert either. I talked to one person who used to be a scout, and he thinks it's partly mental and that Heyward is thinking too much. Not just letting instinct take over. Hitting has to come naturally, and you have to be relaxed at the plate. He doesn't think Heyward is comfortable in the batter's box. He thinks Heyward (with the Cubs) is aware of his struggles and thinks about his swing rather than just letting it come naturally. In the OF, his defensive instincts are off the charts and he just reacts.

can we just make a new rule that nobody ever talks about heyward's swing mechanics?

he's going to suck or he will do better and be just alright. i'm sick and tired of it

I saw him out at a golf range last fall. He opens up his hips too soon which is causing him to push the ball to his left. Needs to work on keeping his hips closed through impact.
