Random question but I noticed that Lackey was tossed before the play was even dead. What would have happened if there was a throw to the plate that got by Contreras and Lackey had to go and grab it?

 

My guess is that he ejection would take effect at the next dead ball but if that's not the case the Cubs temporarily played with 8 eligible players on the field.

Oh and the Cardinals forum is claiming Brett Lawrie slammed his helmet on the ground which caused it to hit an ump and he was suspended 4 games. Hope that doesn't happen to Willy

I watched a replay of the ejection and it was the Cards broadcast. After Lackey and Contreras got ejected Tim McCarver said something like "the battery was ejected, try running a car without a battery" The car ran just fine. Weirdo.

That did happen to Lawrie. It would be horseshit if Willson was suspended even 1 game. That ump with a short fuse despite horsefeathering up in a pivotal game can go wear all white wristbands for all I care.

If I'm remembering it correctly, the umpire reacted as if he got shot. You can always count on an exaggerated reaction by an umpire to any slight bump.

 

Eh, after watching the Lawrie one again, I guess the ump's reaction wasn't as exaggerated as I thought. And Lawrie threw it more in the direction of the ump than Willson did. I can't imagine his punishment will be as severe
