using my Edwards there isn't like "seemingly questionable but actually defendable for X, Y, Z reasons and maddon is quite shrewd if you think about it." it's just like comically obviously and blatantly stupid.

he's right

i'm not trying to defend the decision to use carl there. i'm just trying to squint hard enough to see what he's saying is all

He's saying that not only was the result a failure, but even worse so was the process.

my bad. you have your autocorrect on and mine is off i guess. it doesn't read very horsefeathering clear. i'm not sure what is so hard to understand about that?

Now that the emotions have died down, it's weird that Joe has a weird level of trust in struggling or even outright bad relievers like Edwards and Travis Wood, but when someone like Rondon or Strop finally turn a corner they're still not used effectively. Maddon is fantastic but this is the one thing that I struggle with regarding him

well it starts out "my edwards" for one. it was mainly a joke. i got the gist of his statement but it didn't read super clearly. lighten up.

So onwards to a west coast trip that includes a series in that amusement park in Arizona. Yay.

Maybe Schwarber will die in the outfield and give the Cubs good mojo again

Why doesn't Maddon get any love for Strop and Rondon turning the corner?

i could change 1 & 2 either way but it seemed pretty clear it was optimal based on recent performances (if for lack of control only):

1) Rondon

2) Strop

3) Edwards

Hell, put Uehara at 3 and CJE at 4 for that matter if you want. to parrot another poster, i really never bitch about joe but his bullpen management/decisions is really bizarre at times.

Well at least Rondon isn't hurt:

Just being saved for a non-existing 9th inning save situation against not the meat of the lineup. Hopefully Strop and Rondon will finally get CEJ's high leverage innings and CEJ can get some low leverage innings to right the ship.

Didn't see the game, but Joe had some atrocious bullpen management this week. We had a day off on Monday, followed by a game we won by 12 runs, a game we lost 3-0, a back-and-forth game that we eventually lost 10-8, a 4-2 game that was a 1-run game in the 8th, a 7-4 game yesterday that we led by 3+ from 6th inning on, and then today.

The only game Rondon pitched in was the 12-run game. Carl pitched three times: in the back-and-forth 10-8 loss; in the 4-2 loss, when it was a 1-run game before he came in; and in the 8th inning with a 1-run lead today.

Yesterday was the only time we won a game by less than 12 runs this week. And our starter gave us 6.2 innings today and Joe managed to work himself into a situation where he used only our three worst relievers.

Also, I continue to enjoy FlyTheW's clamoring for Schwarber to be sent down, even after he's been presented information showing Schwarber with an OPS over .900 since being called back up, and in a game Schwarber homers again.

one day we'll be telling our kids about the glory days when the cubs were 6 games over .500 is a horsefeathers division

Quit watching them if you hate them so much.

oh shut up, i expect the cubs to pull away at some point like we all do, that doesn't mean we can't point out that they've kind of sucked for 4 months. we constantly talk about how much the brewers and cardinals suck, but they've both performed at a level comparable to the cubs, sooo. i understand that bemoaning reality after losses is still annoying, but it's not like my post about them sucking again was heavy meatballery or anything

Big difference is that those teams do suck. And the Cubs played sucky.

They had a rough week against two good teams. They've been much better since the break, after some guys got healthy and we made additions.

You've been claiming this as a lost season since April, and, yet, still in first. You don't have to fly off the handle after every freaking loss.

You've said some heavy meatballery stuff throughout the season.

i mean, i wrote a single sentence complaining about how they're playing crappy again. how is that flying off the handle? i admire that you can write long paragraphs after every loss telling us why they don't matter, but it's kind of weird to act all shocked when somebody points out that they're still having a disappointing season

yeah but it's usually a one-off based in reality. david and lots of other good posters do the same thing. if i start talking about bryant's performance in the clutch or DFAing edwards, feel free to call me out
