AZL Cubs play their first game tonight. Who are the guys to watch there?

Pitching, you've got Jose Albertos, who you know about. Brailyn Marquez is a projectable lefty that's still a bit raw. Was the top lefty pitching prospect in the J-2 2015 class(weak class admittedly). Faustino Carrera is another lefty worth paying attention to. But, he's not exciting. He knows how to pitch though. Not a lot of projection, but he was excellent in the DSL. Yunior Perez throws hard, as does Fauris Guerrero. Perez was a pretty big bonus guy too.

Hitting, you've got Delvin Zinn. He's not much of a bat, but he can pick it at short. He's a bit older, so he needs to get off to a solid start. Yonathan Perlaza is a squatty 2B that got a mill plus bonus in 2015. Should be spraying line drives all over. May not stick at 2B. Jose Gutierrez is an athletic CF that was supposed to be very raw, but really wasn't. He's got pop, solid fielder, good all around prospect. He's another 2015 J-2 guy. And you've got Jonathan Sierra. Very raw. Big upside. Big dude. Should develop plenty of power. Cubs gave him 2.5 mill in 2015. Pure projection, but he's got a good eye, just needs to change his swing path.

You'll also start seeing draftees show up at ANY point. Some will move quickly from Arizona to Eugene, maybe even SB.

I'd also add Nathan Sweeney, a RHP from last year's draft who was a rare prep pitcher to sign after the 10th round. He only got a $100k bonus but was committed to a good baseball school in Arizona.

Not giving up a homer in the DSL literally means nothing. Entire teams hit 20 a year there lol. Some fields don't even have fences and the OFers play so far back that there's no chance of hitting them.

My point exactly. They're meaningless in the DSL too, so there's no reason for you to keep bringing it up as some sort of accomplishment.

Hudson goes 5 5 1 1 3 6, on 95 pitches.....5/1 GB/FB.

I wonder if he's changing something? Over his last 4 starts, he's gone 19.1 innings, with 18 K's. Quite a difference from starting the year out with 16 K's in his first 39.1 innings.

He might just be executing his pitches better. #development

I was hoping for some added velo obviously. Or even just a damn velo report on him lol.

I'll watch today's game later and see what they say. In previous games, I haven't noticed my difference in velo but his breaking ball seemed to be hitting spots a little more often. He's got a good curveball. MWL hitters struggle with it when it's placed well, at least. Don't know how it will play against better competition, but he's got time on his side.

Consistently good performance is meaningful for a prospect. It seems to indicate sustainable performance as a player moves up and solid approach at the plate/ability to repeat mechanics on the mound.

We saw this in the breakout year of Willson Contreras, and we are seeing it now with Charcer Burks.

His slash line on April 24th was .305/.414/.492. After last night's DH (46 games later), it stood at .309/.401/.464. And that was after an 0-for-3, no walk performance that broke an 18-game on base streak. It was his first game in June that he failed to reach base.

He previously had a 17-game on base streak from April 15th to May 3rd when he went 0-for-4. He has yet to go 2 games in a row without getting on base and has only gone hitless 2 games in a row 3 times, all in the month of April.

After not getting on base last night, Burks has a hit and a walk in his 1st 3 PAs tonight.

Wow, Carson Sands is starting for the AZL Cubs.

1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 1-0 GO-FO

I was surprised to see that as well. I thought his timetable to return was a lot later.

Four 18-year-olds and two 19-year-olds in the AZL Cubs line-up. That's a young team. Of course, the draftees are still to come.

And Clifton is [expletive] the bed again tonight. 3 6 6 6 2 2.

It didn't get any better, 4IP & 8ER.

Awful start, but I don't understand the "again" reference?!?

He hasn't had a game like this the entire year; I don't know if he had a game like this last year, either.

I like Lang, but the difference between him and Faedo (pick #18 by the Tigers) is obvious.

Faedo could probably be the Cubs 5th starter right now.

OK, back to the Cubs...

Yeah, I may be being a bit tough on him. But, I was expecting him to grow into a consensus top 100 type and his walks are up quite a bit from last year. K's are down some too. He's definitely not gained value from where he was at the end of last year.

Faedo should've been a top ten pick. Teams passing on him 8-17 due to minor knee surgeries was silly.

He's shown some pitchability to minimize damage this season but his year has been very disappointing so far.
