So Bears sign Glennon, Wheaton, Sims, and Demps so far? Am I missing anyone else?

Nope.

But Pace missed quite a few guys today.

I'm surprised at how many of you guys want us to blow our load in FA, which is generally an absolutely terrible plan.

This is dumb and wrong.

The idea that smart teams don't spend in free agency is dumb and wrong. You have to spend in free agency to compete. There is no such thing as a purely draft driven team. Cap space can and should be used to acquire the best players possible.

Well of course no team is purely draft driven and we're obviously not now as it stands and never will be so I don't mean that...

But I find paying decent players like they're the best at their position a little concerning.

Gilmore was good one year and average the next. No idea what you're gonna get. And how do we possibly beat the Pats in any race like that... I thought we were a longshot as it was. Not surprised Pace couldnt land him.

So we move on to Bouye, who is a good cover guy but doesn't make many plays on the ball. He really doesn't move the needle much for us IMO.

But I like the second wave of FA and Pace has shown he does as well. There's still plenty of time to upgrade the team without handing out huge contracts to questionable players.

You do realize how bad the CBs were last season right? You go from that to Bouye. It's not lIke a downgrade or lateral move here. That move the needle quite a bit.

Yes it sucks that he doesn't get a bunch of takeaways, but he's still very valuable with his coverage. You're either making the QB throw in a bad/tight spot or have him hold the ball a sec or 2 because he's gotta look elsewhere which might be enough time for the front 7 to get to him.

Now granted, there's CBs out there that can still improve this team and maybe Pace decided to go with the quantity route this year to build up the team overall and have more depth. I can def get behind that, but I think they could get a couple high impact players AND go with the quantity route with the cap space they have (now and future).

Apparently, Logan Ryan is a slot guy that gets lots of safety help, not someone who fits Fangio's scheme.

Prince Amukamara?

He"s unreliable in man coverage, too.

I'm thinking Mo Claiborne.

3 yr/$18M, $10M guaranteed for Sims.

Thats.... a lot more than I was expecting.

YUP IT SURE IS

That's within a mill per year of what Doyle got.....

but Doyle's actually decent and has some use in the passing game.

I'm trying to understand this Sims thing because apparently Gase was high on him too.

He's a big target, and that shows in his Catch % which was bested by these TEs this year

Jack Doyle

Martellus Bennett

Vernon Davis

He had 4 TD receptions (all in the redzone, as are his 8 career receptions). If he can be a redzone target there's some value to that, though not 6M a year without bigger improvements.

Exactly. My point is we overpay for a guy like this, but miss out on impact players at reasonable deals.

Here's Kevin Seifert's take on the Glennon signing

http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/232946/nfl-day-1-free-agency-winners-and-losers

Best value

I don't have a single objection to the pending marriage between quarterback Mike Glennon and the Chicago Bears. The true commitment is relatively moderate, and the upside for both sides is high.

Ultimately, this deal requires the Bears to pay Glennon like an established NFL starter for one season. He is guaranteed $18.5 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. (At the moment, 12 other NFL quarterbacks have contracts that average at least $19 million annually.)

It's true that Glennon hasn't played (or succeeded) enough to be considered "established," but I can echo what others have said: There are tons of people in league circles who believe he is a starting-caliber talent. The Bears won't be any less competitive with him than they were with Jay Cutler, and at 27, Glennon hasn't hit his ceiling yet. We don't know how good he can be.

If he is as feared -- a backup who got overpaid by a desperate team that tried to get cute -- then it was a one-year mistake for a franchise that has plenty of work to do in other areas as well. There is nothing about this signing that precludes the Bears from drafting a longer-term answer. They entered free agency among the NFL leaders in salary-cap room, and who other than the McCaskey family cares if they spent their cash wisely?

As for Glennon, there weren't many teams who were willing to hand him the keys even for one season. He'll get a legitimate chance to show he can be an NFL starter, and the Bears will get a relatively expensive one-year rental that could grow into something more.

Ryan gets 3/30 from Tennessee lol. Holy hell, are we going to just sit on our asses?

Then Biggs says Bouye never even truly considered us, due to being 3-13 and having an unstable coaching staff moving forward lol.

Holy horsefeathers, Theo must be looking at Pace and laughing his horsefeathering ass off.

What's the point of Zach Miller? Nothing like a good 32 year old TE on a team not build to compete for at least 5 years.

Seriously, WTF? We've literally ADDED needs to our draft outlook, instead of subtracting from it.....

QB, WR, OT, TE, DL, EDGE, CB(multiple), S

At this point, horsefeathers adding a QB in the draft. Let the new coach next year consult and get the guy he wants, instead of being stuck with a guy he didn't choose and immediately have to teach him a different pro system.

I expected us to grab some impact guys in FA. I went into today honestly thinking that we would add enough to where it was POSSIBLE to be a potential playoff team even with Glennon.

Welp, I'd say I was wrong lol. I actually thought we could set ourselves up to where drafting a QB in the 1st or 2nd was possible AND still fill in enough spots to where the team looked relatively solid on paper.

Trade down, trade down again, then trade down again lol.

Amukamara or Claiborne? If they'll even consider us lol? I figure we'll wind up with Kendall Wright, for some reason.

Holy horsefeathers, today sucked. I'm sure there's some hot taeks in this.....But horsefeathers it. This was cringe-worthy.

We wouldn't have wanted him at that price, he's a slot corner that's heavily protected by safeties.

I have a feeling that Pace will draft Lattimore and another CB high now, and run with them as the starters.
