And that would all be really short sided if you thought there was a potential franchise QB who just wasnt going to produce enough in year 1 to cool the hot seat.

Won't argue that. But if your job is on the line, you're going to do what it takes to keep it. Especially in a scenario where you can reason it out by saying next years crop of QB's obliterates this years.

But if you think you're close to being a playoff team and get a guy for QB who can win you a bunch of games what's it matter how many QBs are at the top of the draft in 2018? Just my opinion, but Jackson looks like he's got a really inaccurate arm and he's pretty skinny to be running around. And I haven't looked at him a lot but I've seen a lot of people saying Browning doesn't have the arm for the NFL.

Maybe the guys next year are great, but they haven't but put up to the scrutiny of how well they'll translate to the NFL. Right now, the only guys I've seen as consensus top picks without big warts are Rosen and Darnold. Maybe Josh Allen will be in there if he doesn't declare this year, maybe Falk will jump, maybe some other guys have good years.

I won't pretend to be an expert on next year's QB class, but if there really are some great guys I'd anticipate them going top 5-10. I think the Bears will be drafting in the back half of round 1 if they don't draft and start a rookie (and if no huge injury wave hits). So thI n you're back to Raw's scenario of having to take the 3-5th QB on the board at the Bears pick. Maybe the 2018 QB class is so much better than the 2017 class that the 3-5th guy next year is as good as the 1-2 guy this year but that doesn't seem likely.

And I probably covered this in my thousand posts yesterday, but I'm hoping Pace isn't forced to make this pick based on how hot his seat is. This ownership group hasn't been the best at identifying GM talent in the past, so I have little confidence they'd find an upgrade. As such, if hope Pace can just build his team the way that makes the most sense long term.

My main point is Pace can easily look at the 3rd pick as a chance to add an impact p!ayer from Day 1. With an average to below average QB class(I may even be high on that assessment), its easy to see him taking a guy that falls to the 2nd or 3rd. Maybe even later than that, if you have Taylor. Either way, it still can allow for a 1st round QB at a later time, when his job security may be a bit safer.

Does anyone have our PFF grades?

The way people have talked about Amos taking a step back this year (locally in the media), I would've guessed he had graded out much worse. They loved him last year, too.

1 FF, 1 FR, and 0 INTs. They need some guys that force turnovers. To me, he IS OK as a starter, but if he's not our 3rd or 4th best DB, its probably not a team strength at least......Which is fine, as long as the front 7 produces.

Kind of a weird graphic. Its just the last game starters, which included at least one guy who was signed off the PS just a few weeks prior. Wonder how some more significant season long contributors graded.

Zach Miller graded out really well. (81.7)

Goldman too (80.0)

Doh.

Definitely a lot of below average saw significant time. Little surprised at Porter being so low and then LeBlanc and Callahan. FA/Porter/LeBlanc/Callahan makes for a believably good CB-Nickle-Dime rotation. FA/Amos/Jones-Quartey is a believably good S rotation. Then you have a ton of 2nd or 3rd year guys who saw quality rotation time as depth.

Theres some depth on the DL and edge too, but another elite player somewhere would be awesome.

PFF didn't like Porter last year, either, FWIW.

If Long comes back and is above average, that puts 3 above average o-linemen, with Whitehair possibly developing into elite, and Leno and Massie (Massie had to play at an above average level during the second half to get where he finished) being average. This is a good place to build. They need a QB.

On the front 7, they have Goldman, Hicks, and Freeman solidly above average with Freeman being elite. Trevathan, Young, Sutton, and McPhee as average. Add in rookies Kwiatkowski and Floyd, who should continue to develop. CJ Wilson is a free agent, i could go either way on him.

I guess Amos figures to keep his starting job with everyone else getting replaced. I'm good with Porter playing nickel, but that's it. They need 3 new starters at dback.

Big holes to fill are at CB and one safety spot.

If you don't trade the 3rd pick, you go with best available player there. Jonathan Allen makes the defensive front very nasty, and allows the Bears to rotate Bullard and Sutton in as they see fit. Fangio can also do some weird blitz schemes with Floyd, McPhee, and Young.

In the second, you go with Maye or King, depending upon what you did in free agency. If you get Berry, you go with King. If you get Johnson, you go with Maye.

Then, you're drafting for depth.

Pray to God we get Romo, and we're in the playoffs.

Well, Romo is a big if, but i think they'll show well in free agency.

well, that's no good. But Fox said that there would be personnel changes. Kinda weird, considering they're supposed to be coaching at the senior bowl.

I never disagreed. But honestly, what's funny is the idea that the Bears could make it to the playoffs this next year. IF Pace hits on his picks like he did last year, 2 years from now they make a push. But you still have Fox at the helm, and will Romo make it 2 years?

I really don't get how people make this sort of statement about NFL teams.

The Bears absolutely could make the playoffs next year and it would not take some laughable course of events to happen.

Seems like he has wanted out.

they blocked him from going to Miami, maybe he held a grudge.

In the events listed above, I noticed Sulley kind of completely glossed over the secondary other then to say they all need to be replaced except for Amos. [emoji102]

I don't care how dominate you want to project our front 7, it likely (like, VERY LIKELY) won't improve enough to make up for that giant hole

Playoffs would be a [expletive] miracle

Put Jonathan Allen in the front 7 and the secondary will improve significantly without any changes. Add Trumaine Johnson or Eric Berry, and the secondary becomes average.

Big win jumps happen in the NFL and in pro sports in general all the time.

A good draft and offseason plus continued development from the existing young players and the Bears could easily be in playoff contention next year. And if they are in contention, by definition they could be in the playoffs. Am I saying it's probable? No. But it's definitely a realistic "if things go right" outcome.

Also, dominant*

saying a team could qualify for the playoffs is not saying they will be flawless. Lots of playoff teams have lots of weaknesses.
