[expletive] on MLB network went position vs position Cubs vs Rangers and this is what they decided

Lucroy over Contreras

Rizzo over Mooreland

Odor over Zobrist

Bryant over Beltre

Gomez over Soler

Fowler over Desmond

Beltran over Heyward

Rotation even

the rangers are 30-8 in one run games and have an expected w-l record that's 11 games worse than their current record. the rangers are the fourth-best team in the american league, after the blue jays, red sox and indians (in some order).

The funniest thing about this segment is they'd compare each player with a screen that showed things like their OPS and some kind of defensive rating, yet basically all they would talk about were dongs, batting average and "intangibles."

Of all they ways to try to analyze the Cubs, position by position may be the absolute worst way to do it, given how many guys on this team play multiple positions, and how we don't even have a regular LF. They use Soler who has played less games in LF this year than Bryant has.

Yeah, when they got to LF I changed the channel; I'm honestly surprised they picked Fowler given how dumb it was.

Did they forget about that pesky SS position?

Nah, they picked Russell, though they acted like it was such a torturous pick between them. One of them even brought up the huge defensive difference and Reynolds' response was inexplicably something like, "yeah, but I love the way Elvis catches the ball." Whatever the horsefeathers THAT means.

Does he not catch it with a glove, like everyone else? Maybe he uses a tuba? Or a cowboy boot?

And why would they feel the need to measure guys position-by-position? So the difference between Dexter Fowler and Ian Desmond -- which is literally the smallest difference possible, since WAR only goes to tenths -- counts the same as the difference between Rizzo and Moreland? It's really a stupid thing to do. It proves nothing. Why are we worried about measuring Rizzo against Moreland? Are they going to arm wrestle in the fifth inning? This makes a little more sense in basketball, where those guys have to guard each other. You can look at lineups and see if there are any mismatches.

This is just the dumbest idea ever, though. And that's without getting into the horrible defender with a sub-.300 OBP being better than Ben Zobrist.
