Just have, like, 6 permanent locations each for the 2 Olympics and cycle through those and cut the (literal) [expletive].

the olympics have become really unwieldy with the number of sports that have been added, and the requirement that individual cities have to build world class facilities in a lot of sports that aren't even played in that city or country. IMO the olympic committee would be well served to move to more of a soccer world cup-style format, where a country or even partnership of countries host the games, rather than the entire financial and logistical burden falling on a single city. a lot of cities are starting to figure out that it's not worth the cost and hassle, which is why you end up terrible options like beijing and almaty, kazakhstan being the finalists to host a winter olympics.

I really don't think Almaty is a terrible option, especially relative to Beijing.

I'm sure Almaty would be just fiiiiine http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160727/02813c85f7b47724df2a14ded80ed0dc.jpg

Nice. Now do LA, Beijing or any number of other successful host cities.

The Olympics going the way of World's Fairs (which, inexplicably, still occur) doesn't seem like the worst thing.

kazakhstan has nowhere near the infrastructure to host the event (they'd probably find a way, albeit with many of the problems that are currently happening in rio), and i'm not big on rewarding the games to repressive governments with lousy human rights records.

The opening ceremony isn’t until Friday evening, but the Olympic events kicked off at the Maracanã yesterday with some women’s soccer, a necessity to cram all the matches in. And just before kickoff, officials realized they didn’t have the key to one of the stadium’s two gates. Enter the fire patrol with the bolt cutters.

yeah, I remember the Sochi [expletive] show too. maybe this will be such a disaster that they finally stop doing Olympics

The Sochi stuff was like: the new toilets in the Sochi athletes' quarters have pipes that don't go anywhere.

The Rio stuff is like: squatters have been inhabiting those quarters for years and have been using the toilets with pipes that don't go anywhere.

also, it's fair to mention that Brazilians love the Dark Souls series and insist on playing them online, at the peril of everyone else in the world who lives in a country with passable internet.

Watching the 2008s was so much more enjoyable than 2012, especially because of the swimming and NBC didn't horsefeathers it up.

I have enough trouble staying interested in the Olympics, but any time the time zone difference is too large, it's a pointless endevour. All the main games/competitions will be shown in prime time, whilenallnthenresukts will have been spoiled earlier in the day. There's a fighting chance this year with Rio only being one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone. But China? Forget it

Adding to the Rio Olympics disaster watch, A consulting firm scheduled a phone interview with me - on a Friday evening, after hours - right as the opening ceremonies begin.

Thanks Obama.

Awesome gig though.

Meh, the Olympics suck anyway. Someone on 538 called them "sports packaged for non-sports fans", and that sounds about right to me. I'll probably watch soccer. And baseball when it comes back in 4 years.

Definitely have very little interest in the ceremonies. If there's some bit of it worth watching, it'll make its way online.

Good luck on the interview though!

I can get that, but the corruption and capitalism of everything behind the scenes taints it for me. The false "purity" of it...
