Bears sign former Arizona tackle Bobby Massie

5:07 p.m. ET, Wed., March 9

Kyle Long had an inconsistent 2015 season at right tackle for the Bears, so finding a replacement that allows him to kick back inside to his natural right guard position makes sense. This being said, Bobby Massie should not be viewed as a top-end starter. He has been an above-average run-blocker during his four-year career, but in 2,084 career pass-blocking snaps, his cumulative grade is -38.3 (0.0 is average). Chicago’s move was first reported by Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole. – Josh Liskiewitz, @PFF_Josh

Bears re-sign Tracy Porter

6:08 p.m. ET, Wed., March 9

Tracy Porter is re-signing with the Chicago Bears on a three-year, $16.5 million deal, per Ian Rapoport. This is steep money for a player that has five straight negatively-graded seasons. Porter graded out as our 78th-best cornerback in 2015, allowing seven touchdowns and 687 yards in his coverage. His 1.40 yards per cover snap allowed ranked in the bottom quarter of the league. – John Kosko, @PFF_JohnKosko

So we had 46M walking into today with another 5M likely coming once we get rid of Bennett. Just on a per year basis looks like we committed just short of 20M annually. Even with the draft pool, still have a lot of money. I'd imagine we'll be front loading these cap hits a bit though. I'd expect a DB and S in the 5-9m + range and a couple million on a swing interior lineman (whether it's bringing back Montgomery or someone else). Several near minimum vet signings to fill out roster holes, and then go into the draft still wanting a high pick at DL. Big question is if TE is a hole going into the draft. It will take easily the 5M we save on Bennett for even an average replacement.

Eta - looks like our draft pool is a hair over 8M. So assuming straight cap hits on the signings today, about ~18M to spend. (23M without Bennett). Of course they won't go right up to the cap and there is a lot of flexibility in how to structure cap hits.

Possible Bears target Jaye Howard back to Chiefs, at 12M per year.

DLineman are going for a lot of dough. If we do ideed get Akiem Hicks, I'm not expecting it to be cheap.

it's 2/12M, isnt it?

Not sure. Just saw 12 per. Still a lot.

2/12 or 12 per are hugely different

In quest to find a worse backup than Claussen, the Bears have interest in Scott Tolzien.

Also, the Massie contract, though I thought was high on AAV, at least looks like a prove it deal. Basically this year is guaranteed, with two "option" years where it is very easy to get out of. No firm details on Porter yet.

I thought Tracy Porter played a pro bowl caliber CB last season.

The Bears apparently did too. PFF clearly did not.

have to question a site that has Alshon Jeffery as the best grade of any free agent last season.

he really was a good player last season. maybe it's the fact that he had a lot of noticeable pass breakups, though, and the rest of the time he was bad.

I found it interesting. He did have 22 pass breakups. I liked Porter and have no problem with them bringing him back at ~5 mil with the dearth of secondary depth on the team. He's not great, but I wouldn't even address starting CB opposite Fuller before I picked out multiple guys to help the front 7.

Pretty crazy to go from Shea McClellin and Christian Jones to Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman at ILB. Two of the bottom 10 LBs in the league to 2 just below pro-bowl level LBs.
