Wait, are there people all of a sudden piping up like they wanted Price or Cueto now? Because I certainly don't remember those talks prior to the deadline.

i said i wanted price numerous times. and for what it took to get hamels, i definitely would have taken that, too.

cueto, not so much.

hell, after seeing we ended up with dan [expletive] haren, i would've given up something for latos.

I for sure thought the Cubs wouldn't make the playoffs and that they'd lose out to the Giants. I am for sure happy that right now I'm wrong. That said, I feel sort of like people are overreacting to this goodness the same way some overreact to the not so goodness.

It is possible this is just a really good stretch of baseball -- every single team has one at some point -- but I hope to continue to be wrong all the way to a World Series championship.

Also, I can't tell if people are being sarcastic or not, but does everyone really think Kris Bryant sucks? I'm disturbed by the Kris Bryant sucks thread in the general discussion, but I still don't know if people are just joking. For the record, I think he's really, really good.

Yes, a lot of people thought he sucked when sucked, which was up until about a week ago. He really sucked for a while. It happens.

well, my thread was tongue in cheek, but i was and am concerned.

OK, good to know at least you were being sarcastic. I can't tell you how to feel and you've proven to me to be quite intelligent, but I wouldn't worry all that much.

I understand why they didn't go all out at the deadline, but it really does suck that we have prospects and pieces and we weren't able to cash those in to plug up a pretty notable hole in the form of our 5th starter. We have a perfect guy for the job of "5th starter" in Hendricks, but we needed one pitcher better than him to allow him to be that. We, in my mind, had the means to address this problem, but decided to play it safe. That's understandable, yet frustrating.

I'm not happy with what we got. Not at all. But as long as Price was going somewhere he wouldn't get locked up prior to hitting FA, I didn't want him personally. Scoff, roll your eyes, whatever,(not directed at you David, or anyone in particular honestly) but I didn't want to give up a TON for a rental. Not for what's extremely likely going to be a play-in game. I get that everyone is tired as [expletive] waiting-me too, but I'm not willing to gut [expletive] for a true rental.....I'd have given up McKinney or anyone underneath him for Kazmir too, so it's not like I was totally against rentals or anything. Latos, Leake, I wanted more than what we got.

But I'm glad we didn't give up Javy and Torres or more for 2 months of Price or Cueto, when we can get them free in the offseason.

I truly wish I knew whether to be pissed at not getting Carrasco or Ross- Just no idea what was required to get them.

I know I'll hear a ton of "you can't bank on the future" stuff, so be it. I'm fine with not giving up a ton for the rentals and will roll the dice on what's also a roll of the dice( the play in game) We're built thru hitting, not pitching, and I feel very comfortable moving forward.

Again-I wanted more than what we did, but I was just more in the true 2nd tier camp(which Haren wasn't part of)

Oh, yeah. I agree he sucked. But I couldn't tell (can't tell, still) if people think he is going to stay suck for good or if he was just being a rookie.

I think most are just assuming it's the league adjusting and him going through growing pains.

If anything, the one game playoff specifically should have had people clamoring for them to get another quality starter; that game is potentially a spanner in the works in regards to how a team would want to or have to user their starting rotation at the end of the season and in the first round. Adding a another good starter just gives a team that much more ammo to roll with that and increase their odds of being able to comfortably throw someone out there their confident can give them a great chance to win critical games. It's not like they're anywhere near having too many good starters.

This was the 2004 montage:

I think Rondon Fan had a better 13 minute or so montage from 2003 that used to be online

2004 ended up being a big disappointment, but that season was entertaining as hell. it still had some of the leftover magic from 03, where we thought that was just the beginning of a stretch of dominance.

my favorite part is chip saying that they had come "all the way back" when they never trailed by more than 2

what if he really is barry larkin

There ain't no dumbbells in here; just his balls.

Was at a wedding and decided to watch the replay of the game while going over the game thread...I recognized the reference immediately, with the accent in my head and everything, but took me half a minute to understand WHY it happened. Well played.

so i was watching some of the giants broadcast from that inning when diamondmind was complaining about their announcers (the inning russell led of with the double and we didn't do anything) and i noticed very little making fun of the cubs. they did say it was a matchup between the team with the most recent WS and the least, but it didn't seem all that mean spirited.

they spent the rest of the time making fun of the mopy giant fans they had seen throughout the city and in the crowd.

It's not so much about sleeping on the guy as his being what we needed; an upgrade over the revolving door of [expletive] that was the end of our rotation.

And personally, Price would have been great, but I can hardly blame them for not going all in, especially considering he'll be a part of a very strong free agent crop. I am, however, a bit sore that the Padres thing fell apart. If Javy was the key to landing Ross and Kimmel, I can't understand not pulling the trigger. Of course for all we know, it could later come out that they wanted Schwarber and Javy. But that's a rant for another thread and a few weeks ago.

I'd blame Preller's insanity for any deal with the Padres falling through.
