Well Rizzo was an all star last year so you'd expect that to continue only he has been sub replacement level for 5 weeks running, castro was an all star last year and had his best hitting season you shouldn't reasonably expect he'd turn into a bottom 5 hitter in all of baseball. Bryant mashed everything in the minors, Soler crushed the ball in the minors and with the Cubs last September, russell was crushing it in the minors. They just all randomly stopped hitting when they spend a prolonged period under Cubs major league coaching.

I don't see any reason to put more guys on base than you need to in a 3 run game against a below average pitcher.

Like 2, maybe 3 guys have hit their 50% projections. There are various reasons and places for blame as to why that happened, that's the how.

It's failure, plain and simple. It's not just bad luck or "hey, they're a bunch of kids!" It's poor, overly simplistic team construction.

Yeah this is close to "worst case scenario" non-injury edition. Just about everyone has hit below projections, some significantly so.

Of course not. But he's not very good and only signed through this year, so he's kind of just an add-on at best.

The Astros are 2 games ahead of the Cubs, record wise. Unless you're talking about the Cubs fortune of sharing a division with 2 of the 3 best records in MLB.

The Cubs weren't supposed to be that good this year. Most people projected them at 81-85 wins, which they'll still probably achieve. Most experts pegged 2016 as the start of their prime and they and we all knew this would be a painful year at times. They played awesome in the first half and we were spoiled. We'll probably see flashes of it again in the next two months, but the Cubs are playing right along with projections.
